Fort Pierce crime down, police chief says

FORT PIERCEViolent crimes in 2008 decreased by more than seven percent in the city compared with the previous year, and overall crime went down by more than four percent, Police Chief Sean Baldwin said.

In addition, over the last five years Fort Pierce has seen a 12 percent drop in overall crime, Baldwin announced in a news release circulated today. (more…)

Ex-chief in Fort Pierce, Port St. Lucie could be in line to be drug czar

A former police chief for both Fort Pierce and Port St. Lucie appears to be the next in line for the Cabinet-level post commonly called the White House “drug czar.”

The Seattle Times and Seattle Post-Intelligencer reported Wednesday that Seattle Police Chief Gil Kerlikowske will be appointed director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy.

The news comes as no surprise to those who worked with Kerlikowske, 59, in the late 1980s, when he was the police chief of Port St. Lucie, and in the early 1990s, while he held the same position with Fort Pierce. (more…)

Police aide accused of tipping off gang members

FORT PIERCEPolice arrested one of their own employees after they say she was caught feeding information to a jailed gang member to help intimidate witnesses in his pending jury trial.

Ebony Baret, 28, was a community service aide who worked with the Fort Pierce Police Department since late 2001.

She was arrested today after a joint investigation by police and the 19th Judicial Circuit State Attorney’s Office revealed she was using department equipment to tip off gang members about the department’s operations, Chief Sean Baldwin said. (more…)
