Big band concert at the Port St. Lucie Civic Center

PORT ST. LUCIE - The Port St. Lucie Community Concert Band is to play at 7 p.m. Feb. 19 in the Emerald Ballroom of the civic center.

The band, under the direction of Stephen Torick, will feature music by Glenn Miller, Harry James and Benny Goodman, as well as the sounds of Alexander’s Ragtime Band, Dixieland Jam and St. Louis Blues. The evening will also include an Armed Forces Salute in honor of our veterans and those who currently serve in the military. (more…)

PORT ST. LUCIE — For years now, Port St. Lucie has been one of the fastest-growing cities in the nation.

Intended to be a retirement community, the city instead has lured many young families with its quieter pace, affordable housing and easy commute to South Florida.

What the city has lacked, however, is a downtown: somewhere to wander and shop, grab a quick lunch, attend community events and just be.

That may be about to change: The long-awaited Port St. Lucie Civic Center, a $25 million, 100,000-square-foot facility off U.S. 1 and Walton Road, will open Monday with a week of festivities. City officials will hold a traditional ribbon-cutting ceremony at 10 a.m. Monday, and tours will be held from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday.
