Vero Beach man, 67, accused of using screwdriver to repeatedly sexually assault girl, 4

Sunday, September 27th, 2009 by TCPalm.com

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — Authorities said a 67-year-old man used a screwdriver in repeated sexual assaults on a 4-year-old girl.

Horace Lanette Dean of the 8700 block of 100th Court, Vero Beach, was charged with capital sexual battery Thursday and was being held in lieu of $50,000 bail at the Indian River County Jail.

Detectives for the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office began investigating Dean when the girl was treated for injuries at Indian River Medical Center, the arrest affidavit said. The mother of the child told detectives the girl had been complaining of vaginal irritation for a couple of weeks and she initially believed the problem was a urinary tract infection. But the girl told the mother about the incidents with Dean and the screwdriver, the affidavit said.

Dean denied committing the crimes in his interview with detectives, his affidavit said.

“He’s been here 50 years in this community and has been an outstanding citizen,” said Dean’s attorney, Bob Stone. “I assure you he intends to defend this case to the fullest. In the end, the truth will come out.”

Fort Pierce woman reopens store 3 weeks after husband killed in robbery

Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009 by TCPalm.com

FORT PIERCE — After hugging friends and family as a panel was removed from the front door, Neha Patel nervously walked into A & M Discount Beverages at 9 a.m. Tuesday morning and took her place behind the counter, the same place where her husband, Parag C. Patel, was killed during a Sept. 4 armed robbery.

But the counter in the reopened store now is topped with thick, bullet-proof glass, one of the safety measures the Patel family installed at the suggestion of Fort Pierce police.

“I’m a little nervous,” Neha Patel said from behind the glass. “But I feel safe. There, for a while, I didn’t think I was going to make it; but I got so much support from my friends and family and customers that I decided to reopen the store.”

STUART — Police said they took a man into custody Wednesday after he bought a stolen iPhone and tried returning it to its owner.

Johnny Harris, 29, of the 7700 block of Southeast Kingsway Street, Hobe Sound, was charged with dealing in stolen property. He was being held at the Martin County Jail in lieu of $10,000 bail.

Stuart police said a house burglary happened Monday in which the intruders took the iPhone, according to the arrest affidavit. Harris told police he ran into someone Tuesday night who sold it to him for $175, the affidavit said.

The owner of the iPhone contacted Harris, who agreed to a rendezvous in the 2300 block of South Federal Highway to return the device. When Harris arrived, officers took him into custody. Police said in the affidavit that Harris should have known the phone was stolen.

Tuesday, September 15th, 2009 by TCPalm.com

SEBASTIAN — Police investigators said they uncovered a criminal enterprise involving ill-gotten prescription drugs, out-of-state pill smuggling and stolen auto parts when they searched a home last weekend.

Investigators spent 30 hours searching an undisclosed home late Friday and most of Saturday, said Sebastian Officer Steve Marcinik, police spokesman. Eight investigators recovered more than 3,000 pills with a street value of $60,000, as well as $6,500 worth of stolen property and $4,500 cash, investigators said.

“This shows a direct link between theft and the illegal prescription drug business,” Marcinik said.

‘Feel safe???’ Port St. Lucie police union protests layoffs with billboard

Tuesday, September 15th, 2009 by TCPalm.com

PORT ST. LUCIE — The International Union of Police Associations, which represents the city’s police officers, put a sign on a billboard Sunday at U.S. 1 and Jennings Road to protest the city sending layoff notices to eight police officers.

The notices advised the officers their last day of employment would be Sept. 30.

One side of the billboard reads, “Welcome to Port St. Lucie! Violent crime is up 14.4 percent! Feel safe???”

The other side breaks down what the city spent on the civic center and plans to spend to bring a private digital production studio to the city. It also cites a figure, $1.5 million, as the annual upkeep of the botanical garden project.

Indian River County OKs bigger bonuses for sheriff’s employees not getting raises

Tuesday, September 15th, 2009 by TCPalm.com

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — A year after Sheriff’s Office employees got a $1,000 bonus in lieu of raises from retiring Sheriff Roy Raymond, current Sheriff Deryl Loar is expected to give at least some of them a bigger bonus, as much as $1,600 each.

It’s the product of an unusual situation, sheriff’s Comptroller Harry Hall said Monday. He said he expects to have $747,000 unspent at the end of the month.

Some of the savings, he said, came from budgeting $3.48 per gallon last fall for patrol cars’ gasoline and seeing prices drop to $1 less. And there haven’t been as many jail inmates hospitalized, he added.

“It’s like the planets all lined up,” Hall said. “It’s unrealistic to think this can continue (in future years).”

FORT PIERCE — Shelitta Woods calls the past six months “miserable.”

“You got to understand, it’d been like 13, 14 years before I had another child,” Woods said. “It was just me and Lil’ Bo, just me and Lil’ Bo, everywhere I go, me and Lil’ Bo.”

Woods’ 16-year-old son, Torenda “Lil’ Bo” Youngblood Jr., was fatally shot at his bus stop March 9, two days after Demetrius Wells, 18, sustained fatal wounds in a drive-by shooting. Two men also were hit by gunfire during separate shootings between the homicides. (more…)

Step into giant video game at $40 million Indian River State College Public Safety Training Complex open house

Wednesday, September 9th, 2009 by TCPalm.com

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — After weeks of police officer training in a classroom, Indian River State College students move on to a small platform that provides a high-tech simulation of how they react in a real-life situation.

They’re given a weapon that only emits lasers and equipped with a belt that zaps them if they put themselves in danger.

“It teaches consequences if they make bad decisions,” Stephen Huntsberger, associate dean of Public Service Education for IRSC, said of the VirTra Systems simulator at the complex.

The simulator is one of the planned demonstrations at Friday’s public open house at the new Indian River State College Public Safety Complex.
