INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — Authorities Tuesday filed charges against a man who allegedly punched and killed a 6-pound dog earlier this month.
Justin Dabelow, 23, of the 1300 block of 16th Court Southwest, Vero Beach, posted $7,000 bail Wednesday at the Indian River County Jail. He was charged with cruelty to animals, disposal of bodies of dead animals and abandonment of an animal.
Dabelow told the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office on Nov. 7 he was at his home and removing his girlfriend’s Yorkshire terrier from its crate when it bit him on his hand. He punched the dog and it went unconscious.
Later, he and his girlfriend checked on the dog and found it was dead, according to an incident report. Dabelow took the dog’s body and tossed it into the woods behind his home, the report states.

STUART — Two Riviera Beach City Police Department detectives were honored Friday by the Martin County Veterans Council for making certain a homeless, 61-year-old Vietnam veteran received a proper military funeral.
Other than the military honor detail and cemetery employees, the detectives were the only people at the service.
“He died alone, but he had served his country. We just didn’t want him to go to an anonymous grave,” said Detective Jeremy Summers, who came to Stuart to VFW Post 4194 Friday to receive the official thanks. The other detective, Sgt. Patrick Galligan, was unable to come because of a family matter.

STUART — Paul Crandall drove through downtown Stuart in his parking enforcement car on his last Friday on the job and recalled some of his most memorable cases.
There was the time a patron at The Ashley threatened to shoot Crandall when he gave him a ticket for parking left side-to-curb on a two-way street.
There was the time he ticketed a pickup truck parked on the sidewalk with its rear end jutting into the middle of South Colorado Avenue.
And there was the time an employee at a downtown business on Southwest Flagler Avenue told him she violated the area’s three-hour parking restriction because she didn’t want to park across Southwest Dixie Highway and walk across the train tracks to her job in high heels.
