Teen ’sexting happens all the time’ on Treasure Coast, cops urge parental involvement

Monday, April 27th, 2009 by TCPalm.com

It’s common to see Treasure Coast teens and preteens using cell phones for sending text messages and photos.

But it’s also becoming common for teens nationwide to send other things via their phones or computer Web cameras, including explicit and sexual photographs that have given the phenomenon a new name — sexting.

“It’s been going on for several years here. We just didn’t call it this,” said Detective Brian Broughton of the Martin County Sheriff’s Office. “Now it has a little buzz word, but basically we’re referring to the same thing — when children would take nude pictures of themselves and send it to other children.”

Remains arrive in U.S. of former Port St. Lucie resident killed in Iraq

Wednesday, April 15th, 2009 by TCPalm.com

DOVER, Del. — The body of a former Port St. Lucie resident killed in Iraq on Sunday was flown here early Tuesday afternoon, where his parents and siblings waited for him.

Army Spc. Michael Anaya, 23, died in Bayji, northwest of Baghdad, when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle.

His parents, Carmelo Sr. and Cheryl, and his older siblings, Carmelo Jr. and Trista Moffett, watched as the flag-draped box carrying his body was saluted and led across the tarmac by an honor guard.

“They did a very professional job. It was like they were handling their own family,” his sister said. “They were wonderful to him and to us.”

After the box was placed in a medical examiner’s van, Moffett and other family members returned to their vehicle and watched through the windows as Michael disappeared from sight.

“We sat until we couldn’t see him anymore,” she said. “We watched the honor guard walk away.

“It still feels so unreal,” she added.

The media was allowed to photograph the transfer of the soldier from the airplane to the van waiting to take him to the medical examiner’s office. (more…)

Girl says man follows her, throws explicit photo at her

Tuesday, December 16th, 2008 by Ana X. Ceron

PORT ST. LUCIE — Police are looking for a man whom a 10-year-old girl said followed her from her school bus stop on Friday before tossing a photograph of male genitalia at her.

The girl said she was walking from her bus stop on Southwest Meridian Avenue when the man followed her on a bicycle and threw the explicit photograph at her, according to a police report.

About two weeks before, the girl had seen the same man on a bike following her from the bus stop, she told police.

Another girl told police there were more pictures on the corner of Neptune Avenue and Rosser Boulevard, but police did not find any, the report states. The report doesn’t state the nature of those pictures.

A man living on Meridian Avenue told police he had seen a man riding a bicycle and smoking a cigarette that afternoon on Rosser Boulevard and Aledo Lane.
