Settlement reached before start of Martin trial in illegal immigrant’s death

STUART —A wrongful death suit brought by the estate of an illegal immigrant against the Martin County Sheriff’s Office was settled prior to opening statements at the Martin County Courthouse Tuesday.

Just before bringing in the three-man, four-woman panel, attorneys for the Sheriff’s Office and Port St. Lucie resident Brenda Gonzalez, 33, the personal representative of Matias F. Alonzo’s estate, told Circuit Judge Elizabeth Metzger that a $15,000 settlement had been reached. (more…)

Stuart woman killed after being hit by car while crossing U.S. 1

STUART — A Stuart woman was killed Thursday night as she was attempting to cross the southbound lanes of U.S. 1 in the 1700 block of Northwest Federal Highway.

Stuart police report Martha Clearwater, 42, was airlifted to Lawnwood Medical Center in Fort Pierce with severe injuries following the 7:15 p.m. accident and was pronounced dead shortly after arriving.

Pedestrian hit by vehicle dies

FORT PIERCE — A man using a walker died this morning after he was hit by a vehicle while he was trying to cross Juanita Avenue.

St. Lucie County Fire District crews responded to 1111 Bedford Drive at about 7:10 this morning, district spokeswoman Catherine Chaney said. Witnesses told crews Fort Pierce resident Cecil Rivers, 51, was walking across the street when he was struck, Chaney said.

The vehicle that struck him was driven by Fort Pierce resident Ezekiel Rhyant, 77, according to Florida Highway Patrol. Neither Rhyant or his passenger were injured.

According to FHP, Rhyant was driving east on Juanita when Rivers walked into his path.

Paramedics transported Rivers to Lawnwood Regional Medical Center for treatment, fire district and Florida Highway Patrol officials said. According to FHP, the man died this morning.

No other information was immediately available.

Crash victim doesn’t remember who he is

FORT PIERCE — Police are asking the public’s help to identify a man who doesn’t remember who he is after he was hit by a vehicle last month.

The man was attempting to cross U.S. 1 near Avenue A when he walked into the path of a 2009 Dodge just before 6:30 p.m. on Jan. 30.

The man was airlifted to Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne, where he is still receiving treatment, police spokeswoman Audria Moore said. He doesn’t know who he is and is unable to speak to police, she said. (more…)

Police: Pedestrian dies hours after walking into oncoming van

FORT PIERCE — The elderly man who crossed into the path of an oncoming minivan on Tuesday morning died from his injuries that night, police said.

John Insinga, 93, was trying to cross U.S. 1 heading west when he walked into the path of a minivan traveling south on U.S. 1, police spokeswoman Audria Moore said. (more…)
