State: evidence lacking in allegation against detention officer
Friday, April 10th, 2009 by Ana X. CeronFORT PIERCE — State officials have determined there wasn’t enough evidence to prove that an officer exposed himself to a woman working at the St. Lucie County juvenile detention center in late February.
The officer was placed on paid administrative leave March 3 after a kitchen worker reported to the St. Lucie Regional Juvenile Detention Center staff and Fort Pierce police that the 37-year-old officer exposed himself to her on Feb. 28.
Three days later, the state juvenile justice department’s inspector general office launched an investigation and last month determined there wasn’t enough evident to prove the allegation.
The 34-year-old Port St. Lucie woman told state officials she was mopping up the kitchen floor that Saturday night when the juvenile justice detention officer came in to ask for snacks for the children.
The woman said the officer called her by her nickname three times. She turned to look at him once and he seemed to be fumbling with his pants, she said. The second time she looked, he exposed his genitals, she said.
