Motorcyclist severely injured in Stuart crash

— A motorcyclist was severely injured when an automobile made a U-turn in front of him on the southbound lane of U.S.1 north of the Roosevelt Bridge, said Sgt. Martin Jacobson of the Stuart Police Department.

“The motorcyclist suffered multiple broken bones but we think he will make it,” said Jacobson. “It wasn’t his fault. A woman driving in front of him suddenly turned around in front of him and he T-boned the vehicle.” (more…)

U.S. 1 road work near Midway should be done before March

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — Motorists and business owners hoping the New Year would bring the end of cones and construction on U.S. 1 between Rio Mar Drive and Midway Road might have to wait another month or two.

Unforeseen concrete underneath the road that needs to be removed pushed the $25.9 million project’s finish date back. By the end of February, the state has committed to getting the project to a point where all work won’t be noticed by drivers passing by, said Barbara Kelleher, spokeswoman for the Florida Department of Transportation District 4.

Work on retention ponds and other off-site work could still take place after February, but the work will not affect the road itself, so drivers won’t notice it. (more…)

Proximity to Bahamas gives Stuart opportunity to capitalize

MARTIN COUNTY — For Gary Guertin, the almost 68 miles of ocean that separate Stuart from Grand Bahama is not a divide, it’s a bridge.

And it’s an opportunity to capitalize on Stuart’s waterfront resources and promote the two destinations.

The general manager of the Harborage Yacht Club & Marina in Stuart has formed partnerships with marinas and resorts in the Bahamas in the hopes of attracting customers to Stuart as they travel out to sea. Others said partnerships with the Bahamas could be helpful if they brought business, although they were wary of the costs. (more…)

Citrus Boulevard extension ribbon-cutting today

Martin County and Port St. Lucie officials will celebrate a ribbon cutting ceremony this morning marking the completion of the Citrus Boulevard extension.

This 5.5 mile segment of roadway connects Palm City to Port St. Lucie, between SR 714 and Port St. Lucie Boulevard.

The event will be held on the Martin County side of the bridge at the Martin-St. Lucie County line at 11 a.m. The public is welcome to attend.
