Dead animals hung on trees in Fort Pierce

FORT PIERCE — Police found seagulls with ropes around their necks along with decayed fish and toys hanging from two palm trees in the 800 block of South Indian River Drive, a recently released report said.

Seagulls were hanging from one tree and items described as “miscellaneous toys” had been placed above the birds.

On the other tree, police found assorted toys, sandals, about nine decayed fish and two seagulls with ropes around their necks.

Protestors stage showdown with FPL over 450-acre swap in Martin County

A showdown is brewing near Port Mayaca in Martin County as a group of environmental protesters are camping out for a second night tonight demanding access to a natural swamp on land owned by Florida Power and Light Co.

“If they don’t open the swamp, we will cross the tracks and risk arrest,” said Peter Shultz of Hobe Sound, a member of Everglades Earth First. (more…)

Bird slams into Port St. Lucie driver’s head

PORT ST. LUCIE — A half-blind bird crashed into a motorist’s head Tuesday afternoon, leaving the driver slightly dizzy and nauseous, but with no apparent major injuries, police and rescue officials said.

The gray bird, which was about a half-foot long, wasn’t so lucky and ended up dead.

The man drove a Chevrolet Lumina south on Southwest Cashmere Boulevard about 500 feet from the Sunlight Community Church with his window a few inches down, said Officer Robert Vega, police spokesman.

That, he said, is when the wayward bird flew through the window, slamming into the side of the driver’s head.
