ST. LUCIE COUNTY — Two Port St. Lucie women were unexpectedly reunited with a long-lost, furry friend during a visit to the Humane Society of St. Lucie County on Monday.

Sisters, Amanda, 23, and Vanessa Migliore, 24, had been heartbroken by the loss of their 12-year-old Beagle Tweeter a year and a half ago. Finally, they visited the Fort Pierce animal shelter in search of a new puppy to adopt.

What they found shocked the siblings, who shared a tearful reunion with the dog, who was equally as excited to see his owners.

“We broke down and started crying when we saw him,” Amanda Migliore said. “It was amazing. I honestly never thought I’d see him again.”

Shawn Hart of the Humane Society watched the sisters exit the shelter, an ecstatic Tweeter in tow.

“I’ve never seen a dog so enthusiastic. He was howling and screaming. He was obviously happy,” Hart said. “It was great to see him go to the adoption center and see him reunited with his family.”

Migliore said Tweeter, who was named after a character in the movie “Varsity Blues,” was a notorious wanderer, but always managed to find his way back home. Migliore said Tweeter went missing two months after the sisters moved to Port St. Lucie from New Jersey. They launched a search, complete with fliers on trees, but never located the dog, who lacked a microchip.

To prevent another mishap, Tweeter recently received a chip.

“At first, we weren’t too big on microchips,” said Migliore, who has two other dogs with the identity verification device. “But I agree with it now.”

Hart said Tweeter arrived at the shelter on Feb. 1 as a stray. Although the Migliores, who raised Tweeter since birth, never had the canine neutered, he had the procedure done sometime during his disappearance, Hart said.

“He’s a little overweight and his knees are a little wobbly because of the weight,” said Hart, who added that overall, Tweeter was in good health. “Somebody had him and was feeding him.”

Migliore said although her beloved dog has aged, his lovable personality has remained the same.

“He’s very, very goofy and outgoing,” Migliore said. “He’s really bubbly for a dog. He loves giving random people kisses.”
