PORT ST. LUCIE  – The search is on for an American man who went missing off the coast of Mexico after the boat he was sailing in capsized on Friday.

The victim, Joey Horrevoets, was helping another man sail a boat he had just sold travel down to Ecuador.

When the pair stopped off the coast near Rosarito, Mexico, and tried to make it ashore on a dinghy, a huge wave came out of nowhere. It knocked both Pablo Hildalgo and Joey Horrevoets into the Pacific Ocean.

“I, I couldn’t believe it. You know, I felt bad about this trip in the first place,” said Joseph Horrevoets, the victim’s father.

Horrevoets said he is trying to do everything he can thousands of miles away from his home in Port Saint Lucie.

Horrevoets said he has been told by the American Consulate the man his son was traveling with, Hildalgo, was rescued by the Mexican Coast Guard. An official told Horrevoets his son has yet to be found.

“I’m hoping that he swam to shore or that another ship or that some miracle happened or that I get a phone call,” said Horrevoets.

Horrevoets said he has been advised by the American Consulate to not travel to Mexico to help with the search of his son.

A request for information with the American Consulate was not granted. The office said any information regarding the search for Joey Horrevoets would have to wait until Monday.
