ST. LUCIE COUNTY — A Vero Beach woman died at the scene and two people were injured during a Monday afternoon traffic crash on South Indian River Drive just north of Southeast Walton Road, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Crews went to the head-on crash at Ohio Street and South Indian River Drive about 1:50 p.m. Monday.

Troopers said 28-year-old Ivan Tate of Fort Pierce was traveling north on Indian River Drive in a Toyota Camry. Tate lost control of his car, veering to the right and through a curve, according to a news release. The Camry crashed into a Buick Lucerne, troopers said.

The passenger in the Buick, Esther Stege, 81, of Vero Beach, was killed, FHP said. It took crews about an hour to free the driver, Norbert Stege, 80, of Vero Beach, from the same car, St. Lucie County Fire District spokeswoman Catherine Chaney said. He and Tate were listed in critical condition at Lawnwood Regional Medical Center & Heart Institute in Fort Pierce.

South Indian River Drive between Midway and Walton roads was closed for a couple of hours during the investigation and clean up. Troopers were still investigating the crash Monday night.
