U.S. 1 opened late Thursday evening in Indian River County following head-on collision

Authorities opened U.S. 1 late Thursday evening after closing it for more than three hours following a head-on collision near 67th Street.

Four people were seriously injured and either flown or take to two trauma hospitals — two to Lawnwood Regional Medical Center & Heart Institute in Fort Pierce and the other two to Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne. Two of the four were flown to a hospital, but details about who and which hospital were not released Thursday.

The crash happened about 5:25 p.m. It involved two cars — one white and the other black — but the the makes and models of the cars were not easily identifiable amid the mangled metal.

The crash closed the road during the evening rush hour. The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating.

No further information was available Friday morning.
