LUCIE COUNTY — David Cassidy, the famed teen heartthrob of the 1970s best known for his role in the television show “The Partridge Family,” was arrested Wednesday on a DUI charge after a Florida Highway Patrol trooper spotted his white Mercedes weaving on Florida’s Turnpike, according to an affidavit released Thursday.

Cassidy, 60, was southbound just north of Okeechobee Road when the trooper noticed his white 2008 Mercedes traveling off the road and then on the road a number of times, the report stated. The trooper stopped Cassidy at Okeechobee Road about 6:10 p.m. after another vehicle had to brake “abruptly” to avoid a crash.

When the trooper explained the reason for the stop, Cassidy, of Fort Lauderdale, appeared “somewhat confused,” the affidavit stated. While looking for his registration and proof of insurance, the trooper said Cassidy “was very apologetic for having to be stopped.” He also looked to be nervous and fumbled with papers in the glove box.

Cassidy said he was on prescription medications. He told the trooper he’d had a glass of wine around lunch time and took “a hydrocodone” about 3:30 p.m.

After performing field sobriety exercises, Cassidy was deemed to be impaired.

Breath tests about 8:30 p.m. measured Cassidy’s blood alcohol content at 0.139 percent and 0.141 percent — greater than the 0.08 percent legal limit.

Investigators found a half empty bottle of Labrot & Graham Woodford Reserve bourbon in the right back seat floorboard of his vehicle.

Cassidy’s daughter, Katie Cassidy, was arrested in 2007 in Arizona in an alcohol related incident. She was 20 at the time and reportedly gave police false information about her identity.

David Cassidy faces charges including DUI, failure to maintain a single lane and open container violation. He was released about 3:30 a.m. Thursday from the St. Lucie County Jail on $350 bail, a St. Lucie County Sheriff’s official said.

Repeated efforts Thursday to reach Cassidy, who breeds and races thoroughbred horses, or a representative were unsuccessful.

A maid seen Thursday at Cassidy’s Fort Lauderdale home said he was not home and couldn’t provide further information, according to the Sun-Sentinel.

Cassidy shot to stardom and became a hugely celebrated teen idol after his role in the “The Partridge Family,” which premiered in 1970 and also starred Cassidy’s stepmother Shirley Jones, Susan Dey and Danny Bonaduce. “I Think I Love You” by The Partridge Family was a hit single.

Over the next several years membership in his fan club exceeded that of the Beatles and Elvis Presley, though the latter two are considered to be far more culturally significant.

Cassidy broke box office records at venues including Houston’s Astrodome and New York’s Madison Square Garden.

  16. Mr. Bojangles Says:

heck you have to be drinking to get stuck in St. Lucie.

  17. friendfromlosangelescali Says:

Give him a break! He’s an actor not a hero! He’s iconic amongst teen legends…like the Fonz and Leif Garret, Scott Baio. So he needs some support and rehab..Life sucks sometimes don’t need to be a supporter of drunk driving but an advocate for safe driving. I bet he’s really cool in person. I met Anson Williams at Starbucks in Cali as well as Eric Estrada (chips) both were really cool dudes. Give the guy a break! Next time you party David take a cab.

  18. Rueben Kincaid Says:

Oh Danny, still wishing you had Shawn’s success… You’re lucky he turned down your part on the show….

  19. Celine Says:

Not very smart, David. You could have killed someone and/or yourself. Driving while intoxicated is just plain “dumb”. Hope you don’t make this poor judgment call again!

  20. Greg Brady Says:

Of course he was drinking. He is still distraught over the way his dark-haired drumming little brother was suddenly replaced by a blond kid on the drums.

Morever, it must have been frustrating for him to be stuck in a family band where none of his siblings could really sing or play their instruments. Can you blame him for trying to get happy?

The phone number for Alcoholic’s Anonamous in Port St. Lucie is: (772) 873-9299. Give then a call David. They’re reall nice people and it will change your life.

  28. Lisa Says:

So sorry to hear this. I was a couple of years too young to be an all-out fan, but I know a lot of girls that were really into him. I don’t think it’s fair to look upon him as a role model and be disappointed, though, just because he was once a teen heartthrob. People are human. People make mistakes. The difference between people like David Cassidy and me is that when I’ve bottomed out/sinned/screwed up/whatever you want to call it; my name wasn’t plastered all over the tabloids. Thank God!!!

The Partridge Family was a made for T.V. band patterned after the Cowsills; a real, though not so great, family band. One or two hits like: Hair and I love a Flower Girl, but not much more.

  35. Valerie Says:

My husband was hit buy a drunken drive two weeks ago, luckily no one was killed, but the drive was arrested for DUI. The accident has caused a great deal of emotional stress on the family because his car was totaled, he has missed days off from work and had to get a loan out so he could buy a new car. Now we have to pay car payments, go to weekly doctors appointments, not to mention all the time spent on trying to get our affairs in order since the accident. Others are not so lucky. For instance the young man killed in Wellington a few months back by a very rich person. The message here folks, is DO NOT DRINK AND DRIVE BE RESPONSIBLE when you get behind the while of an automobile. It could save your life and those around you.

  36. Casting Stones Says:

Yes, driving drunk is a poor judgment call. But how many posting readers had one more drink than they intended on Halloween, and drove the same streets and just weren’t caught? How many drank as MUCH as they intended and drove anyway? Just sayin’.

David, I still remember my fav line on TPF. You were trying to impress an older girl (in front of mom) and she ordered a drink. You said, I’ll have a Scotch on the rocks. Your mom popped her eyes open at you. You dropped your head and muttered, I’ll just have the rocks.

Glad to have you in S. Florida.

  37. rob Says:

He is famous. you mean like the kardasian girls ?

  38. Diane Says:

Wow, so one time he gets popped for a DUI. Yes, he is wrong for drinking and driving, but how many of you have done the same thing and were lucky enough not to get caught.

  39. PB International Polo Says:

So, a has been, wanna be aging 70′s singer/actor gets pulled over for basically swerving. But John Goodman, announced by this newpaper as a “billionaire” was and is let free to roam… (now Goodman says his net worth is $8M) WOW, either Roy Black is VERY VERY expensive, or just VERY VERY good at hiding a former fat trust fund baby like Goodman

  40. The Fonz Says:

It’s much more fun to go out knowing your going to cab it home. Leave the car home, stay local, you can impress the chicks with how cool it is to get home safe and begin the real fun.

  41. Jan Brady Says:

oh, great, so this is why you stood me up, David? on our next date, i suppose i’ll have to be the one to drive the bus, while you par-tay in the back.
