Pit bull quarantined after attack on golden retriever in Jensen Beach, faces being euthanized
April 15th, 2010 by TCPalm.comJENSEN BEACH — A pit bull dog is quarantined at the Treasure Coast Humane Society after it attacked and bit another dog at Jensen Public Beach and injured two people who tried to intervene, according to a recently released sheriff’s reports.
The dog took the face of a golden retriever into its mouth and wouldn’t let go the afternoon of April 7. Two people who were bitten in the hands were treated at Martin Memorial Medical Center.
The pit bull, named Nina, was impounded and put in a 10-day quarantine. The dog’s custodian, Brittany Edwards, 20, of Stuart, was cited for not having proof of a rabies vaccination or license and for not having under restraint an animal that caused injuries.
Because the dog didn’t attack people — just the dog and the people intervened — the incident doesn’t fit state criteria for being classified a dangerous dog, a sheriff’s official said.
The owner of the golden retriever, Serina Colley, 36, of Palm City, told investigators she was sitting on the beach making sand castles with her 3-year-old daughter when “suddenly out of nowhere a pit bull came rushing over and started attacking my dog.”
It took she, her husband Shawn and mother-in-law to pull off the pit bull, she said.
Edwards told investigators she was keeping the pit bull for a friend who couldn’t keep it because of where he lives. She had the dog on a retractable leash, but the dog overpowered her, reports show.
According to a witness, the incident started with Edwards and an another woman trying to get the pit bull in the ocean and it resisted. Then, the dog reared and broke away, running 20 feet to attack the retriever.
Now, Edwards has to pay $870 in fines within 30 days. The dog’s quarantine ends April 17.
If the dog isn’t claimed by the owner it will be euthanized, said Rhonda Irons, Martin County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman. Because of the details surrounding the incident last week, the dog would not be available for adoption once the quarantine period expires, she said.

As I have stated every time we read about a pitbull attack, when are they going to ban the Pitbull. They are a menace and what if that pitbull attacked the 3 year old child there, then what?? Still nothing is being done. People have died from pitbull attacks and they still don’t do anything about banning the breed of dog. A golden retriever is the sweetest dog there is and I have never heard of a golden attacking anything, but pitbulls you read about it almost every day. Innocent people cannot even go out in public and these dogs are attacking them or their pets. Governor needs to ban these dogs. Maybe he will after he or someone he knows is attacked or possibly killed. Get rid of the pitbulls forever.
April 15th, 2010 at 9:44 am
Put the Pitbull down and it will be one less we have to worry about. They are always attacking people or their pets. It is not fair that someone walks by a house by themself or with their pet and they are attacked. Get rid of this breed of dog, haven’t Pitbulls done enough to be banned??? Come on, you read about it every day. When I walk my dog, I take my concealed weapons permit with me and my gun attached to my side and would not hesitate to shoot any pitbull if I see them coming toward me. Kill them all so we innocent people and pets and be safe on the streets.
April 15th, 2010 at 9:59 am
“Kill them all so we innocent people and pets and be safe on the streets.”
You are small minded and obviuosly unducated and ignorant. What are you American?, Well Americans fight an kill each others every day. Is your bright solution to “Kill them All” too? Wait, their are latinos here and some are in gangs. Should we “Kill every Latino!!!”
Do you not understand how ignorant and small minded you are.
Maybe we should kill the ignorant and small minded people so we innocent people and pets can be safe on the streets?
Ban the DEED not the BREED!!!
I foster dogs from the shelter that ignorant people like you drop them off to. They are sweet, loyal, beautiful dogs if they are treated humanely and not abused by more ignorant uneducated idiots like you.
If any dog is trained to fight by (probably by your distant igrorant lowlife realtives) humans, thats what the dog will do. Get it- still HUMANS FAULT. No different then teaching your son to go rob 7-ll and shoot someone. Does that mean the entire human race should be punished because of your stupid family??
Get where Im gong here?
Probably not becaue you are too stupid (kill them all)?
April 15th, 2010 at 10:00 am
Not all pit bulls are bad dogs! There loyal loving pets when raised by normal people! Pit bulls should only be sold to people that have the time to put into them. It’s when you have wannable gangster’s take them and turn them into fighting machine. Yes, this dog in question should be put down if they deem it a attack dog. She should have NEVER brought the dog to the beach if she wasn’t sure how the dog would react in that environment. It’s HER fault not the dog’s!
April 15th, 2010 at 10:10 am
I completely disagree with all you pit bull haters and firmly believe 99% of the problems rest with the humans, not the dogs. But, OK, let’s assume we’re going to ban all pit bulls. Most of you who want bans haven’t put two seconds of thought into how society could actually achieve such a result. Do you just want to ban pit bulls or also include the other 30 breeds that have killed people? What about pit mixes … kill them? How do you intend to determine if a dog is actually a pit bull …. many, many people can’t do it accurately. Where is the funding going to come from to enforce a ban and all the lawsuits that follow? Is rounding up thousands of innocent pit bulls (in order to capture a few bad ones) really what you want YOUR law enforcement staff focused on? Have pit bull bans in Miami and Denver worked? … the answer is NO. What breed will thugs, idiots, and knuckle-heads gravitate towards next and are you prepared to ban all those dogs? Do you really want politicians and government telling us what we can and can’t own … where does that slippery slope end? Is eradication of entire breed the proper action even though the overwhelming majority of the breed don’t cause problems? Would we not be better off as a society if we teach our citizens greater responsibility and learn to accept / prepare for a certain level risk rather than clamoring for ineffective BANs every time we see something we don’t like. Come on, people, grow up.
April 15th, 2010 at 10:11 am
Poor dog will be euthanized because of this girls stupidity. Stupid owners need to be banned, not the dogs!
April 15th, 2010 at 10:13 am
Pit bulls are a trash breed for trash people (read: gangster culture and rednecks). Lately, they seem to be a “cause celebre” for bleeding heart hipsters and otherwise educated, respectable people who are hell bent on saving the world. Are there sweet, calm dispositioned pit bulls that “wouldn’t hurt a fly”? sure. But there’s way too many of the tainted variety that have either been abused and/or mistreated, inbred or bred to kill, either themselves or somewhere within 2 or 3 generations of their bloodline. If you don’t think these traits can carry over through breeding you are a moron. Funny how Labs and Golden’s just fetch stuff on instinct without any training….hmmmm. You think Pit Bulls display the same aggression instinctually, regardless of their owners? You bet. Bottom line, these dogs are a social pariah and there should be a ban against them. Honestly, if you’re a well-meaning, law-abiding, eductaed member of society who wants a dog, why choose one that comes with so much baggage? Just to prove some stubborn point. No rational dog lover could ever tell me that a Pit Bull is a better breed than a Lab, Golden, Beagle, etc.
All you pit owners resort to the same tired, pathetic fall back argument: “Don’t be so brainwashed by the media, media bias against pit bulls, etc.”
Just so you know, the source of my bias against pit bulls/pit bull owners comes from personal experience, not some lockstep, feeble-minded viewpoint fueled by “media bias”. You see, in addition to living near the dog beach in Jupiter, I am also an attorney who defends homeowners in personal liability based lawsuits. In the past 3 years, I have defended FOUR homeowners/condominium associations/landlords from lawsuits brought by Plaintiffs who were attacked by this “great breed”. Yes, you heard that right, I have actually defended those I have labeled as trash. Truth be told, 2 of the dogs were mistreated and kept by inattentive owners. However, 2 of the cases also invloved dogs of the stereotypical variety that we hear so much about: “He’s the sweetest, gentlest, kindest, nicest, I don’t know why he did that….” ALL 4 dogs attacked people, (including one elderly woman and one toddler) WITHOUT provocation.
As for my beach experiences, I have a Golden Retriever (I’m sure you saw that one coming) that I take to the beach along with my wife and kids, ages 5 and 2. For the past 4 years or so, I’ve had the opportunity to speak with hundreds of dog owners that frequent this dog friendly beach. In addition to personally witnessing several close calls myself, at least 5 different people have told me horror stories about some knucklehead and his “sweet, funloving” pit bull bolting towards a dog for no reason and attempting to tear it to shreds. Have I heard of other breeds doing this? Sort of. Dogs being dogs, they tend to growl and snap at one another from time to time, especially along a crowded, dog friendly public beach. But 9 times out of 10, your other breeds (say a lab vs. warmareiner or a great dane) will engage each other for a brief moment, typically with some amount of trepidation, merely long enough to send a message through a fierce growl or, at worst, a minor tangle up. Pit Bulls don’t do this. Its simply not in their DNA. They play for keeps and 9 times out of 10 they engage to the DEATH.
So, that being said. Why own a dog that is such a liability? Those who favor these little spawns of satan are either A) gangster types, B)”save the world” bleeding hearts or C) stubborn, social outcasts themselves who feel a certain kinship with this breed.
Typically, group c are people who have always been on the outside looking in their whole life. Maybe they had horrible acne as a teenager, never made the team, weren’t really popular (or unpopular in high school) – just kind of there, basically those people you see in your old yearbooks and wonder: “Hmmm, who is that? I don’t remember anything about him/her, yet I walked the hallways with him/her for 4 years.”
April 15th, 2010 at 10:27 am
In response to Pit = Trash:
Let’s see … an ambulance chasing personal injury attorney who can’t spell, cites statistics that he can’t defend (i.e. “9 times out of 10″ … WTF does that mean), and spews hatred and insults at groups he doesn’t like, is here to tell us what we should think & do about pit bulls … all under the guise of experience and justice. The Florida Bar must be really proud of you.
April 15th, 2010 at 10:42 am
The girl Brittany, who was baby sitting the Pitbull should have never taken Nina (pitbull) the dog she doesn’t own, to a beach where other dogs are hanging out. It’s not the Pitbulls fault she went after another dog, even my own little prissy dogs go after other dogs, large and small. She should have left the dog at home, or mussel the dog in public..now she has to live with the dog being put down. I only feel sorry for the Pitbull in this whole story. Brittany is the loser here for sure.
April 15th, 2010 at 10:43 am
Hey nimrod (aka John): I said I DEFENDED the owners (aka trash), vis-a-vis at the behest of the insurance companies who INSURE them. The ambulance chasers would be those that represent the injured parties.
Your reading comprehension skills are quite impressive.
April 15th, 2010 at 10:51 am
P.S. only tools point out grammar mistakes on a comment board. Seriously man, its not for a grade. Though your hypervigilance (see I just mispelled (that too!) that) about the English language is understandable as I’m sure you must have had a rough time in English class, given your piss poor reading skills.
April 15th, 2010 at 11:12 am
To PIT = TRASH:
Shysters undoubtedly work on both sides of the law … Are we supposed to feel better because you defend insurance companies? Something tells me you take whatever cases pay you, regardless of morals or ethics. Tell you what, why don’t you tell us your name and law firm so that we can all be graced with your legal expertise the next time we need a good DEFENSE attorney. As for spelling, well I’d expect young Brittany to make such errors, but people in your line of work tend to care about correctness … at least the good ones do.
April 15th, 2010 at 11:43 am
John you seem to be missing the point. Allow me to walk you through this.
I posted a lenghty (oops!) commentary about my personal experiences with regard to pit bulls/owners. In your response, you failed to rebut ANY of my comments. Esdentially (damn these clumsy fingers!), all you did was offer some lame, innaccurate (oh this is getting ridiculous) comments about the incendiary nature of my post(s). You see John, the defense attorney aspect was meant to provide context in support of my opinion/viewpoint through a unique perspective that I’ve gained through the years, irrespective of outside media bias.
And just so you know, breed specific banning DOES exist within HOA’s, COA’s and policy exclusions. The government level is a different stroy (drat!). Much harder to implement/enforce, mainly due to people such as yourself. the same type of people I might add who are constantly championing the rights of child molesters and other sexual predators (“Its not their fault…its the system…there needs to be better treatment programs…they can change!”) BS. In my opinion, sexual predators are no different than pit bulls. Both have ingrained, instinctual behaviors that cannot be overcome and should be removed from society all together. Common sense needs to prevail here. Enough of this bleeding heart crap.
April 15th, 2010 at 11:52 am
Not all Pit Bulls are nasty, as I have known some very sweet ones. As far as vicious dogs go, I recently had to put down my pit bull mix because he turned aggressive and bit my mom. It hurt very much to have to do that and I loved him dearly, but I couldn’t take the chance on him attacking someone else. It’s always a tough choice when dealing with a powerful breed and those who choose to own one should take classes on how to handle them. For me, lesson learned the hard way.
April 15th, 2010 at 11:52 am
No put bull will get my Golden Retriever on a beach. See Fla Statute 790.06 if you need clarification.
April 15th, 2010 at 11:57 am
Hey Jen, try running your diatribe through Spellcheck before you send it, it may make you sound a little better.
April 15th, 2010 at 12:02 pm
Thank goodness that pit bull did not get to that little girl. This news story would had been quite different.
April 15th, 2010 at 12:13 pm
I don’t like pitbulls, but the details of this story are sad. It’s not the dog’s fault some brainless idiot not only took a dog she didn’t own to a public beach, but then tried to drag the dog into the water against its will when it was fighting her. Brittany is the one who should be euthanized here, not Nina.
April 15th, 2010 at 12:31 pm
In a lot more advanced cities like Miami, Pit Bulls are prohibited. We still live in the woods here. And Pit Bulls are a man made breed, they are made just to fight to death.
This never ending stuped big discution about a type of dog,or the poor ducks at the lake, just show you this society is doomed. Don’t you americans remember that we are at war???? Can you find something more important to worry ?? lazy fat asses……….
April 15th, 2010 at 12:34 pm
FOR ALL OF YOU STUPID PEOPLE THAT SAY BAN THE BREED !!!!
PITBULLS ARE THE BEST DOGS WHEN TREATED WITH RESPECT AND COMMON SENSE !!!I HAVE TWO OF THEM BOTH MALES WHO PLAY LIKE THEY ARE LITTLE DOGS,BUT IF YOU COME ON TO MY PROPERTY I BET THEY WILL NOT LIKE IT AT ALL.WHICH IS WHY I HAVE THEM.AS FOR THE ONES THAT ATTACK OUTSIDE OF THERE HOME IT IS UP TO THE OWNER TO KEEP THEM FROM HAVING ANY ISSUES WITH OTHER PEOPLE OR ANIMALS.I TAKE MY DOGS IN PUBLIC ALL THE TIME AND HAVE NO PROBLEMS BUT I DO KNOW WHEN TO LOOK FOR A POTENTIAL ISSUE AND I DEAL WITH IT.SO I THINK WE NEED TO LOOK MORE AT THE OWNERS THAN TELLING ME I CAN’T HAVE A CERTAIN KIND OF DOG BECAUSE THERE IS NO ONE GONNA TAKE MY DOGS OR TELL ME I CAN’T HAVE ONE.
April 15th, 2010 at 12:42 pm
To Pit=Trash:
In all due respect to the rules of message board, you are a seriously deranged individual. Ok, fine, forget the ambulance chaser comment or that you’re a lawyer who can’t spell. What about the things you’re not responding to: 1) Grabbing statistics out of thin air? 2) Spewing hatred and hurling insults; 3) Not disclosing the name of your law firm? Sometimes the things we ignore says more about who we are than the things we respond to.
As for the merits of your post itself, there are few. Quasi-defending a few pit bull cases and talking to some folks at Jupiter Beach don’t impress me much. In fact the tone of your post is so offensive and condescending, no educated person would pay it an ounce of credence. I’m thoroughly versed on “the pit bull debate” and can back it up with statistics, experts, and more importantly basic common sense. There are so many flaws in your logic I hardly know where to begin … How about you put aside the hate speak and give us one rational argument against pit bulls backed by something other than personal anecdotes and “9 out of 10″ bar room statistics … Then I’ll respond to that and hopefully the other readers might learn something.
April 15th, 2010 at 12:43 pm
Everyone has their opinions about Pit Bulls and that will probably never change. I have been a proud owner of many pitbulls of the years. I’ve rescued, I’m done a very very very small amount of breeding and i’ve saved several from being fighters or bait dogs. I have had the opportunity to own some of the most amazing pits in the world. Pts that i’ve used in pet therapy, personal protection and trained for a numerous “jobs”. When dealing with this breed, you come across the good, the bad and the ugly, but every breed is like that. Yes, i have definitely been around some dangerous aggressive pitbulls BUT i’ve come across more dangerous dalmations and labs than I have pitbulls (‘ve had the pleasure, eh. . or the task of owning both dalmations and Labs <– which i’m a huge fan of, Love my labs too!!). I truly believe that it’s the media that puts these dogs into the spotlight of being scary. If the media wasn’t one sided, the story of my pitbull being chased and attacked by the jack russell next door and needing seven stitches. Or when my pitbull alerted my husband that i was having an allergic reaction after a previous surgery or all of the wonderful children that my pit has developed relationships with as a therapy dog. The media has always had a negative outlook. . . and the inbreeding that took place after every hardass wannabe wanted a pitbull is fairly similar to what happened when disney made 101 dalmations and the inbreeding that followed to give every child a damn dalmation. That breed can also be very aggressive. The accident that happened was just that, an accident. Yes, we can point fingers and such but if you take a step back, that could have happened with any breed of dog. My mother’s cairn terrier is a vicious beast that has attacked several dogs on the beach after weaseling out of his collar and hi-tailing it to the first thing that moved. It was just an accident.. . and folks, everyone thinks that every damn half breed is a pitbull. Pitbulls, purebreds, are very distinctive, with block heads and big chests. . that is something that annoys me when someone says they were chased down the street by a pitbull and it turns out that the dog was a pomeranian cross. . . . But i guess that’s another issue. Thanks for reading folks and I hope everyone has a lovely day.
April 15th, 2010 at 12:55 pm
WELL SAID BEX !!
THE CROSSBREEDING HAS A LOT TO DO WITH IT.MOST OF THE ATTACKS YOU SEE ARE PIT MIXES BUT NO WANTS TO HEAR ABOUT THAT.IF PITS ARE TRAINED PROPERLY JUST LIKE GERMAN SHEPARDS THEY ARE GREAT DOGS !!!!
MINE DOES EXACTLY WHAT I SAY WHEN I SAY IT.THAT’S HOW IT SHOULD BE.
April 15th, 2010 at 1:00 pm
I cant believe how fast everyone is to hate pitbulls its how they are raised just like how you raise your children i love my pitbulls if it was not for my 12 year old pitbull helping me i would of been robbed outside a store getting gas so for everyone thinking they are all bad they are not i agree that some are raised to be mean but that includes other types to the problem is they are ending up in the wrong hands we need to stop the breeders.god bless
April 15th, 2010 at 1:59 pm
Euthanize the dog and the owner. For this reason, I carry a .357 magnum when I walk my little 12 pound trouble making dog.
April 15th, 2010 at 2:20 pm
To pit=trash.
I dont know but I think our legal eagle may have some other stuff going on. I mean Pit = trash = rednecks? Whats that all about. What is his legal position on banning rednecks? Trust me this guy is using some catch phrases that scare me if he is a lawyer. I mean if he is so against pitbull ownership, why take the case? Oh yeah for the money. So if a person has redneck DNA do we ban them to? And you are a what legal expert. Look give us the name of your firm so we can let Americans know not to use it lawyers. You are soooooo prejudiced. Why not ban people who own speed boats, cause we know them suckers are going to one day go to fast. Bleeding heart? Hmm. Is that political jargen? Somebody is still feeling the elections seems to me. By the way, I have been a pit bull owner, I am a veteran, and I’m in my mid fifties so dont try to pigeon hole me. Pitbulls are like lawyers. There are some good ones and there are some bad ones. Depends on the DNA……………
April 15th, 2010 at 2:20 pm
This all really boils down to one thing: Pit bulls are tacky. Seriously, who wants to hang out/know/date someone with a pit bull. Gross…
April 15th, 2010 at 4:33 pm
Should be illegal to own. People that own pit bulls are the same types that own monkeys and snakes. Looking for attention and trying to stand out. Showing how tough and special they are. I dont even hate pit bulls just the owners. The dogs are just doing what they do. you wouldnt fault a tiger for ripping someones face off. He was just being a tiger. I like the group c comment above bit pit=trash. Get a normal breed, weirdos…
April 16th, 2010 at 3:17 am
I will donate the bullet, and or pull the trigger.
I carry more often to protect my dogs then myself. We have been a victim of a wild Pit Bull attack. Never again.
Next time, I blow its head off and pay the fine for discharging a weapon in city limits. No prob.
April 16th, 2010 at 10:29 am
I FEEL SORRY FOR SOMEONE IF THEY SHOOT MY DOG BECAUSE THEY THINK THEY ARE MEAN.YOU THINK A PITBULL ATTACK IS BAD YOU HAVEN’T SEEN ANYTHING !!!!!!!!!
April 16th, 2010 at 4:05 pm
Wow! All the hate! and to those who are name-calling, you responded too, so that makes you just like the rest of us that responded. We are not lazy or stupid or whatever. Everyone apparently has a very strong opinion one way or the other. There are so many other things to worry about than to spread such vehemence over a breed of dog. Like I said previously, I took responsibility for my dog’s actions and did the right thing, even though it really hurt to do so. Those who would call me irresponsible for owning a pit bull mix are just doing so to be hateful. Mean people suck.
August 13th, 2010 at 11:34 pm
My niece in her early 40′s was attacked and mauled by a pit bull. She has lost use of her right are for the rest of her life. Medical bills are approaching $300,000 and there will be more skin grafts to come. OK you pit bull owners (and similar breeds) put your money where your mouth is.
1. Let there be a law requiring a $500,000 or more liability insurance policy to own such a dog. Most homeowner policies now exclude these breeds.
2. Also, since you say it is all in how they were raised let there be a requirement to own one that the owner has passed a course in how to train the breed and exercise responsible ownership.

In a study released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Rottweilers were named as the dog breed responsible for the largest number fatal dog attacks in the United States….
“Rottweilers were responsible for about halfof human DBRF* reported during the 4 years from 1993through 1996.”
*dog bite-related fatalities

Read your facts, people.

Also, some common sense from our friends at Wiki:
When breaking up a dog fight:
***NEVER put your body in-between the dogs.
***Don’t grab their collars. It puts you too close to the dangerous mouth area,
http://www.wikihow.com/Break-Up-a-Dog-Fight
I wonder how many people got bit while attempting to intervene two fighting dogs INCORRECTLY???
December 22nd, 2010 at 12:00 am
I hate pitbulls too! Two weeks ago I was watching my mother-in-laws (she is 84 years old) 5 lb. chihauhau and our neighbors pitbull somehow grabbed her little nose and pulled her head through our chainlink fence while I was standing right there. It happened in a flash-her head was then stuck and she kept biting her head-I got in there with my hands and pushed the dog off until the owner finally heard all of my screaming and came out to help. He had a hard time keeping his pitbull off of the chihauhau. Her head was then stuck in the fence and he helped me pry her out of it. I saw one ear was almost torn off and one eyeball was hanging out-we took her to the local veterinary er clinic and they put her back together because that is what my mother-in-law wanted, but now she cries every day looking at what that pitbull did to her beautiful chihauhau. I would also like to mention that my husband was attached by a friends pitbull about 20 years ago and had to have about 70 stiches on the backs of his legs. They are an awful breed and are too powerful and do too much damage when they attack/bite. I know any dog can bite/attack another dog or person, but most can’t do the damage that a pitbull can do. I want our little one eared, one eyed Bambi Sue to be the poster child of why people shoudn’t have pitbulls.

As an owner of a dog who was attacked by two pit bulls today in Palm Coast(and YES they were pit bulls, who the owner said are completely harmless), we need to make owners of pit bulls aware of LEASH LAWS. The two who attacked my dog and myself were not restrained in any way! My dog has bitten before, so he is NEVER allowed off leash or near people other than myself and my wife. I don’t blame the dogs, just the owners of these dogs. I hope the owner can afford the $800 vet bill and my bill for the ER.

Pit Bulls years ago were actually a pretty nice and calm breed of dog and excellent with children. The problem now is that they have been inbred with traits taught to them by the sadly “typical” pitbull owner in this day and age. I talking about the guy who owns a pitbull simply just to make up for a lack in “size of tool”. You will also notice that most of them also have the biggest and loudest pickup truck on the block. Just another example of how humans can ruin a breed. The last breed to be ruined to almost the point of extinction was the Doberman. When was the last time you saw one of these?
