Boxer son of Leon Spinks charged with DUI in Indian River

April 12th, 2010 by TCPalm.com

The son of former heavyweight champion Leon Spinks was charged with driving under the influence Saturday, according to Indian River County Sheriff’s records.

A sheriff’s deputy charged Corey Spinks, 32, of St. Louis with the violation as well as leaving the scene of an accident at 3:28 a.m. Saturday. Corey Spinks, who is also a professional boxer, posted $1,000 bail at 8 a.m. Saturday.

According to fightnews.com, Corey Spinks is the International Boxing Federation junior middleweight champion and has earned a 37-5 record.

A sheriff’s deputy said Spinks was driving a Chevrolet westbound in the 800 block of First Street Southwest when he struck a parked Ford Explorer about 1:50 a.m. Saturday. The Explorer owner, who saw the crash, told the Sheriff’s Office Spinks stepped out and asked if everyone was alright. Then, Spinks sat back into the driver’s seat of his Chevrolet and pulled away from the Explorer, according to the arrest affidavit. He drove about 200 yards away from the crash before other witnesses convinced him to stop, the affidavit states.

Spinks told the deputy he couldn’t see the Explorer because the road had no street lights. The deputy said Spinks smelled of alcohol and failed to keep his balance and follow instructions during some of the sobriety tests.

The boxer told the deputy he had two glasses of wine earlier that evening in Jupiter. Spinks’ blood-alcohol content tests were .078 and .074, his affidavit states. Those results were below the state limit of .08, but the deputy wrote in the affidavit it was possible Spinks was over the limit at the time of the crash.
