Controlled burn set for Wednesday in state park in Martin County

April 7th, 2010 by TCPalm.com

A prescribed burn will be conducted Wednesday in the Atlantic Ridge Preserve State Park in Martin County, weather permitting.

The prescribed burn will consist of approximately 562 acres of pine flatwoods. Prescribed fires are conducted only when weather parameters are suitable. The final decision to burn is made daily and in coordination with local fire officials.

Prescribed burning mimics natural fire cycles to restore natural communities, reduces undergrowth that accumulates over time and decreases the potential for wildfire. Burned lands experience an increase in native wildflowers, birds and other wildlife.

Another (un)controlled burn in Martin County. Are there any responsible adults available to put a stop to this annual madness?
