FORT PIERCE — A St. Lucie County Fire District firefighter arrested last week after accusations he spied on a 19-year-old paramedic intern as she showered at Station 15 was fired Monday.

Carlos Alberto Marti, 36, was arrested Friday on a misdemeanor voyeurism charge after he said he was in the ceiling and briefly saw the intern naked at the station in the 700 block of Avenue D.

Marti, of the 2000 block of 28th Avenue in Vero Beach, told Fort Pierce Police he was in the ceiling to play a prank on the intern by dumping flour or pancake mix on her. He said a similar prank was pulled on him about seven years ago and “wanted her to feel like part of the shift,” a report states.

“We do not believe it was a prank,” Fire District spokeswoman Catherine Chaney said Tuesday. “All indications are that it was not a prank.”

Hired in 2001, Marti on Friday was placed on administrative leave without pay. On Monday, he met with Fire Chief Ron Parrish and a union representative. His employment was “terminated effective immediately,” a release states.

Chaney said officials believe the incident is an isolated one, saying the fire district isn’t making any policy changes in its wake.

“I think the fact that he was terminated sends a message,” Chaney said.

In an e-mailed statement, Parrish called the incident “inexcusable behavior.”

“The District hopes the actions of one firefighter will not affect her future career choices,” he wrote.

Marti could not be reached for comment.

Why was a paramedic student allowed at the station after midnight? Why was a paramedic student allowed to shower at the station? Anyone with details please explain.
