Stuart police: Pair tried computer-return scheme at Walmart

December 18th, 2009 by TCPalm.com

STUART — Police are seeking assistance in identifying two people suspected of trying to steal and then fraudulently return computer equipment from a Walmart Supercenter, a news release states.

The Dec. 5 incident happened about 10:45 p.m. at the retail giant in the 4000 block of Southeast U.S. 1.

Video footage shows two people “setting up the theft of a computer and accessories,” the release states. A man selected a computer valued at nearly $800 and then proceeded to the store’s grocery section.

He met a woman at the front door and they tried to leave with the equipment, but the store’s security systems thwarted their efforts, according to the release from Stuart police Sgt. Martin Jacobson.

They told personnel at the door they were returning merchandise and went to the customer service area. They tried to get a refund for the goods they didn’t buy, and, again, store security measures stopped them.

The two ran out of the store, the release states.

Those with information about the two people are asked to call Officer T.J. Delancy at (772) 220-3900 or Treasure Coast Crime Stoppers at (800) 273-TIPS.
