Shark bites man on Jupiter Island

November 16th, 2009 by Daphne Duret

JUPITER ISLAND — A lifeguard swimming in waters off the Jupiter Island Beach Club this morning became the victim of a shark attack.

Martin County Fire-Rescue officials said they received the call for the shark bite at about 9:30 a.m. and transported the man to Jupiter Medical Center for treatment to a bite on his foot. Hospital officials identified him as Steve Burdelski, 22.

Hospital officials said Burdelski, a lifeguard at the club, was still at the hospital Monday afternoon being treated for his injuries. Burdelski through hospital officials declined an interview.

The incident marks the second shark bite since last week in the area.

On Friday, a shark bit a 27-year-old surfer on her foot about 14 miles south of this morning’s attack in waters near the Jupiter Reef Club.

listen up ya all, sharks are always there it is there mating season and bait fish season. just enjoy the water like always. swim near a lifeguard and be cautious. it is probaly more dangerous on the roads this time of year with all the martini drinking snowbirds. your in danger of getting killed by them. before your local sharks. enjoy and god bless!

HELLO WOW!!!!! YOU ARE AN IDIOT
    YOU ARE AN IDIOT

  10. Local Says:

Wow and Surfer Dude are absolutely right.

Sharks aren’t “attacking”. The media seems to achieve a higher level of ridiculousness daily. If someone’s in your home, you defend yourself…especially if you’re trying to procreate.

You’re nearly twice as likely to be killed by a vending machine than you are a shark, and that is 100% fact-look it up. Lets hope this breeding season some of the babies make it out alive…30-100 million sharks are an awful lot to lose yearly. The idea that my future neices/nephews may not ever see a real shark breaks my heart.

  11. Caped Crusader Says:

You’re 200 times more likely to get bitten by a Jupiter Island Club member than by a shark.

  12. chuckp Says:

the white bottom of a human foot looks a lot like a mullet to a shark. it is that simple… so be smarter than the shark - i know you can do it. be happy there are no seals in these waters, surfboards look a lot like seals from underneath - now that would bring some heavy hitters like in s. africa or australia. you are 500 more times likely to be the victim of a ponzi scheme in sofla than to be bitten by a shark.

  13. Jake van Arkel Says:

I’m friends with steve burdelski. I was there when he got attakced. it was because of the murky water and a huge amount of bait fish. BTW caped crusader the thing about the members. I am a member. that fact about them biting you is 100% correct.
