HOBE SOUND — A son of prominent attorney Willie Gary of Stuart and a Hobe Sound man were arrested Tuesday after the Martin County Sheriff’s Office raided a Hobe Sound home used as a marijuana grow house, the Sheriff’s Office said.
Kobie Gary, 30, of Jensen Beach, and Stephen Shepherd, 33, a tenant at the $125,030 home in the 7200 block of Mulberry Drive, were each charged with cultivation of cannabis and possession of marijuana over 20 grams.
Both Gary and Shepherd posted $10,000 bond and were released about 10 p.m. Tuesday, officials said.
Neither commented as they were walked in handcuffs from the single-story three-bedroom house in the working class Hobe Heights community to an unmarked car before being taken to the sheriff’s headquarters where they were to be further interviewed by investigators.
The Sheriff’s Office raided the rented home about 3:15 p.m. and seized more than 254 marijuana plants in various stages of growth and equipment to grow it from seeds, said Sgt. John Budensiek of the Sheriff’s Office special investigations unit. The marijuana has a street value of about $100,000, he added.
“We know it’s been here at least three months at this house,” Budensiek said.

He declined to comment if others were involved.
The unit began investigating what they called “this group” in April, based upon a tip from a confidential source, tracking them from Port St. Lucie, Budensiek said. They lost track of the group until about a month ago when a neighbor called, reporting the odor of marijuana and odd activities at the house, he said.
“We’ve been surveilling the house, like 24-hour surveillance for the last couple of weeks, and today we came here when Mr. Gary arrived at the house,” Budensiek said.
Deputies issued a warrant on the home and arrested Gary and Shepherd as Gary was leaving the house. Neither resisted, Budensiek said.
Two years ago, Willie Gary announced he and Kobie Gary were joining efforts to redevelop Indiantown, starting with town houses at the entrance to Booker Park and working up to single-family houses on West Farm Road.
Willie Gary was not immediately available for comment Tuesday.
Last year, Montii Delevyon Phillips, 26, of Fort Pierce, received two life sentences, with five additional years tacked on, for an armed robbery at Kobie Gary’s Port St. Lucie home.
According to authorities, Phillips was one of three men, one armed with an assault rifle, who attacked Kobie Gary and his girlfriend at their home. Gary and the woman were bound with duct tape, and Gary was hit on the head as the men took $2,500 in cash, a .357-caliber handgun, a watch, wallet, jewelry and a purse.

Okay first let me say he’s innocent till proven guilty, so this is all said assuming he is guilty..So I could be wrong here…
But despite this family doing a lot for the town, this is just complete idiocy. How did it even cross this guys mind to start growing pot? Lack of imagination? Boredom? Bad parenting?
Kobie has a successful father who I’m sure would be more then willing to help him out if he wanted to start a legitimate business.
One note on Kobie’s dad, Willie. I’ve seen him speak a couple of times at PBCC in (Lake Worth) and one presentation in particular, I think back in 2007, was just ridiculous. The guy did nothing but flaunt his wealth in a video showing him flying around in his own jumbo jet while throwing in obvious statements about the importance of school. It was truly a mindless presentation. But if that’s the way Kobie’s dad presents things, no wonder Kobie is growing pot. I’d lose my mind too if all my dad cared about was wealth.
The problem with saying that it’s not his father’s fault is that his father is a public figure so the rules change slightly.
If his dad was smart, use this as an example to come out publicly and say this isn’t excusable etc etc. And as stupid as it sounds, make Kobie apologize publicly and send him to rehab.

So sad, but then again that culture has always felt entitled regardless of any personal wealth they achieve, they view themselves as self important. Of course the Gary’s have been very charitable and should be commended, it still does not change the entitled mindset, that’s just the makeup of that demographic. I do not live in MC and I have never heard of the “Gary’s”. What I will comment on is that his son and another person were doing illegal things and for that they should be arrested. I do not blame his father or family as everyone on this earth makes a choice to follow the rules or not. If you don’t, there are consequences. This is something that parents should be teaching their children. I’ve dealt with more drama since the raid than ever. I didn’t have any idea this was going on. The people were quiet, peaceful neighbors and Kobie was no more than a visitor from time-to-time.
I won’t say that I support doing something like this, but I will say that a lot of wasted resourced are being dedicated to it.

I’ve known the Garys for 20 years. I remember when Willie made his first millions on a lawsuit in Jupiter. All those boys were sadly neglected by their parents in the name of the dollar While Willie tried to parlay wealth into respect and social standing. Never happened. When I saw the living conditions of the migrants in Gary’s barracks in the Glades, I saw the Garys’ true nature. He brags about coming from migrant farmer roots, then treats them like animals. Kobe was an obese child, and the baby of the family. They tried hiring people to help with his weight, but there wasn’t any real family nurturing. In all my contact, I’ve yet to see a happy son or a happy family.

I worked for Willie back in the late 70’s and I have to honestly say that that was the best place I’ve ever worked in all my life. I have fond memories of working there and there was great team work amongst the employees. Gloria is a wonderful person and she’s the type of person who would talk to you for thirty minutes in Winn Dixie and not walk away and be a snob. I don’t agree on this racist garbage because who you’re friends with and where you stand in prominence doesn’t mean you’re a racist. I think there’s alot of jealousy among people when people have money or influence.
We all have skeletons in the closet and you know the old saying from the Bible, “He that is without fault, cast the first stone”. I’m sure that the family will be stronger during this trying time and if anyone has known someone who has a drug problem, then you know what heartache is caused within the family. Rich or Poor, Middle Class or whatever, the problem hits home everywhere, and especially during this economy. You don’t know what is going on at the personal level and can’t pass judgment.

Hello ,
I saw the house which was the drug place in a newspaper photo .Also I saw a photo of the lawyer son been arrested by the police .
As a paralegal-investigator I am 100% against drug so to me to read stories like this one I get very upset.
The father also awhile back did have some rape problems but it look like he beat the charges .
Hoping for the family and his very well known famous attorney Garry that his son did not get in trouble any more.

I do not personally know the Garys, but I’m very proud of their accomplishments. As for Kobie Gary - he is innocent until proven guilty and if he is guilty, then that is something that he will have to deal with. No one is perfect. It truly dismays me to know that so many people are blaming Willie Gary for his son’s actions! Kobe is 30 years old, he may be guilty or innocent,either way he has to face the consequences not his dad. Also it is 2009, why is race even an issue?
Despite of his transgressions Mr. Gary is a prominent and fastidious individual who persevered to overcome many obstacles in his life and he is human. Why are you persecuting the Gary’s for what their son who is an adult has done? Be pragmatic people, we all endeavor to raise our kids to be flourishing, law abiding citizens, but that doesn’t always happen.
I cannot say how much the Gary family has done for the City of Pahokee and Pahokee Middle Senior High School. Your labors to assassinate their moral fiber will only make them stronger.
To those of you, who used this as an opportunity to disparage and denigrate the Gary family’s character, SHAME ON YOU!!!!

One thing is clear. The preusmption of innocence is an orphan on the internet. It really is not clear what kind of case the authorities have.
i really think that in a democracy the people have a need to know whenever an alleged crime takes place. But I also think that it is important to look at both sides of an issue.
I understand that the case has been taken over by Federal authorities. If this is true this raises questions. If local polcie had a solid case then why did the local authorities drop it ?

I do know the Garys, I have spent time with all of them and everytime I read a story about their dysfunctional lives; and no one can argue that, it just reinforces the fact that money cannot buy you happiness!!! What will people remember about Mr. Gary (Willie) after he dies? Will they remember all the good work that he has done or the fact that at 60+ he is nothing more than a male whore? His sons are just like him, they treat people like a sport (yes,the married one also) have no morals, class,nor integrity. Just because he makes millions,that alone doesn’t make him a good person or a role model. I would rather have a person that makes $50,000 a year and lives an honest life to serve as a role model to my children.I am black, I am a female, I dated one of the Garys and after seeing how they really live, I deceided it was not worth it for me. No disrespect, just sharing!!!

I was on the internet searching for an attorney and stumbled on this article. My heart goes out to the Gary family and I totally agree with (70.WOW). You cannot take away from the fact that Willie Gary is an excellent attorney that have won millions for more whites than blacks. Kobie is a grown a__ man and make his own decisions good or bad and he have to suffer the consequences for his actions. His family had nothing to do with his bad action. Who are these people that are so full of hatred towards the Garys and can’t spell or form a complete sentence. Sweep around your own front door before you try to sweep around the Gary family. Invest in a dictionary and use it.
