Teen gets 18 months for shooting boyfriend with shotgun

October 22nd, 2009 by TCPalm.com

FORT PIERCE — An 18-year-old woman who accidentally shot her boyfriend with a shotgun in June and pointed the weapon at two friends was sentenced Thursday to 18 months in prison.

Alyssa N. Dolan was 17 when she shot Curtis Mock, 19, in the right forearm at a house in the 1200 block of Southwest Santiago Avenue in Port St. Lucie.

According to police reports, the shooting occurred while Dolan and Mock were with two friends, an 18-year-old man and a 19-year-old woman. The woman reportedly called Dolan a derogatory name before Dolan got Mock’s pump-action shotgun and began pointing it at the man and woman, saying she’d shoot them.

Dolan allegedly fired the gun as the man and woman drove off in the man’s truck and Mock walked away from it. Pellets from the shotgun blast also hit the truck, police said. Dolan told police she thought the gun’s safety was on and she accidentally fired the weapon.

In August, Dolan pleaded no contest to charges of aggravated assault with a firearm, improper exhibition of a weapon and culpable negligence with injury.

Circuit Judge Dan Vaughn ordered that Dolan, after her release from prison, serve one year of community control and a year of probation.
