PALM BEACH GARDENS — One-time U.S. Rep. Tim Mahoney and his wife of 24 years have agreed to a 50-50 split of their assets, keeping the contentious separation from going to trial, the attorney for the former congressman said Wednesday.
Joel Feldman, the attorney for the Palm Beach Gardens Democrat, said Mahoney will get to keep the Cayman Place home in the PGA National Resort and Spa that was used as his District 16 residence. However, Feldman declined to discuss other details of the settlement.
“They each have what they agreed to get,” Feldman said.
Stuart divorce attorney Karen Steger, representing Mahoney’s ex-wife Terry Ellen Mahoney, was not immediately available for comment Wednesday.
Court paperwork detailing the divorce could take a month to complete.
The former couple had sparred over the use of the PGA National home — at least three times police were called because he allegedly refused to leave the house during hours he’s supposed to be away — in the months following the disclosures that Mahoney paid $121,000 out of his own pocket to settle a sexual harassment lawsuit threatened by a former staffer with whom he was romantically linked, and that he also was having an affair with a Martin County employee.
Terry Mahoney filed for divorce on Oct. 20, 2008, a week after the payoff was reported.
Prior to his defeat in the 2008 election, Mahoney admitted to “numerous” affairs but decided against withdrawing from his bid to retain the District 16 seat, which includes portions of Martin and St. Lucie counties.
