Police: Stuart woman stabbed her dog to death in bathtub as house full of people listened
September 28th, 2009 by TCPalm.comMARTIN COUNTY — A 23-year-old Stuart woman stabbed and killed her dog Sunday, according to an arrest affidavit.
Cassandra Danielle Lauderdale of the 1700 block of Southeast Salerno Road was charged with cruelty to animals and was being held at the Martin County Jail in lieu of $2,500 bail Monday.

The Martin County Sheriff’s Office was called about the incident about 10:30 p.m. Sunday at Lauderdale’s home. Deputies found several people inside, including Lauderdale, who appeared agitated. The people at the home told deputies she had taken the dog into the bathroom and stabbed it in the bathtub, the arrest affidavit said. They told the deputies they heard the dog’s yelps during the attack.
“She uttered that she had the right to kill the dog and it was no one’s business,” Deputy Vance Irick wrote in his report.
Lauderdale took Irick to the back yard, where he said he found the dog dead from several deep stab wounds to the neck. Deputies found blood in the bathroom, with bloody clothes and towels strewn across the place and a bloody knife in the sink.
The report did not indicate what may have led to the attack on the dog.

Good point. Michael Vick had to apologie a million times to the public for dog fighting…. but Ms. Lauderdale here got a corner page in the news paper for “Murdering” her dog… now where’s the justice for this? Will she go to jail? Will she have to apologize to the public and complete “community service” time? To those of you screaming for her to be treated in a similar manner…
If you lock her up for 10 years, where will you put the people who harm people? Trust me, the jails are running out of room for violent criminals who are MUCH worse than she is, people who make her look like Betty Crocker. This woman might be better served with a short jail sentence coupled with mandatory, long term mental health care, as well as periodic evaluations. But of course, that wouldn’t satisfy peoples primitive and disgusting need to feel better about themselves by knowing that someone else is suffering. None of you know this woman, and neither do I. Yet, months from now, when she is long gone from your immediate memory, whatever caused her to behave in this way will still fester if all that happens is she is locked up with hardened criminals and gets NO help, which is what usually happens. Then she will commit another crime, and again, the savage misfits will say “why wasn’t she in jail forever”, and then stick their heads back in the sand, or back in their tv.
Every crime that gets printed in the newspaper gets cries for really harsh punishment. What do you think this woman would be able to contribute to society if you lock her up for decades and then release her when she has been thoroughly dehumanized and degraded? Let me guess, you think the Bible explicitly says that cruelty calls for cruelty? I love it how so-many of you Sunday Christians forget your tenets of compassion and chances for redemption at times like this. Go get your Bible, read it.
One of the central reasons crimes like this are so prevalent is because mental health treatment in this country is a joke. People who have mental problems often turn to drugs or bizarre, animalistic behavior like this, and we all act so surprised. We have privatized the penal system, and elevated it to a leading employment industry, so it is now in our best interest to incarcerated EVERYONE instead of trying to rehabilitate those who can be rehabilitated. Notice I didn’t say everyone.
The next time that you read about some program of mental health well-being getting cut due to lack of funds, don’t just turn your head. These sorts of programs directly impact people who commit crimes like this. Instead of associating “social welfare” programs with socialism or “liberal” politics, instead realize that the mentally ill act out in terrifying ways mainly because they don’t get help and they have no way to fight their demons.
I was a counselor for the homeless and mentally ill for a long time. These people are growing in number, and as long as we keep locking them up and justifying it with bloodthirsty rage and lack of understanding, it will continue to grow.

To bloodthirstymob… I to am a mental health case manager and have been for over a decade. Not everyone who commits these types of crimes have mental impairment. Some people are just ignorant back woods rednecks who think they can “handle their own, and it’s one body’s business.” Sometimes I get sick of people blaming bad behavior on mental illness. Although I do agree there is a major malady for mental health care in this country that’s another story.

It goes to show you how the education system is in this country. I guess whe was never tought or was aware of animal laws. I am not sure most people do, we need more education on Animal laws, as much as human laws, this way this does not happen to such a a young person that thinks that it is o.k to do this.
people compare it to abortion? If we educate our young kids, then abortion can be avoided too!
More animals, more pets = more education on pet laws starting in school and on telivision.
We need to be taught more love and compassion to all living things from a very young age.

Kim if the dog was mean it should have been taken to the “pound” to be euthanized; NOT stabbed to death. Furthermore, mean dogs are made that way from being abused by their owners (fear biters) or trained to be mean and aggressive by their owners; they are not born that way. No doubt that Cassandra, you, and the rest of your trailer/ghetto trash family are the source of the dog being mean. Despite the fact there were other people in the house, why did they allow this to happen if they heard the dog yelping? sad, VERY sad. I have 2 dogs and always had pets and loved them as I did my own children. It’s hard to put down an animal, even when it’s “their time”. Very irresponsible person for sure ! Wow. You write very very well! Your post is reasoned and thoughtful.
I have, for much of my life, been one of the “get-as-harsh-as-you-can-on-the-scumbag-criminal-vermin” types, but I still do see a lot of validity in what you said.
However, I just do not have enough faith that the mental health field really has the capacity to EVER “fix” broken minds like hers and so many others’. It’s not a science, to “rehabilitate” criminals. I really do feel it is very unlikely that any sociopath or psychopath can really be made into a “good person” through the intervention of psychiatrists or other mental health counselors. We as human beings just don’t have that much understanding and control over what makes a personality be the way it is.
So in many cases, I do support the idea of execution (for seriously violent crimes) or long-term incarceration.
I wonder, do you have any insights into why it appears that humanity is churning out so very many broken brains lately? Is it an evolutionary screwup? (As in, a flourishing of a set or sets of bad genes?) Is it chemically induced through our environment? Is it bad upbringing? Social influences (movies, t.v., books, video games, etc.)? What accounts for how truly screwed up SO MANY people are these days?
Of all people, yours is the response to these questions that I would be interested to read.

Joec, it’s amazing how many people are against this woman, yet you defend her. Because it is called having morals. Many other posts were taken down about people wanting to do to her what she did to her dog. I say the law should handle it, and we shouldn’t sink to her level. If you are not a dog lover, fine. Don’t own one. But for this scumbag to think she has the authority to kill her dog boggles my mind. A month ago my dogs got into a fight and after seperating them, I ended up in the emergency room. But I wouldn’t for second think I have the right to take my dog’s life. I still have her, and she, too, is a hound. I am a vegetarian and advocate for animal/environmental protection. I am deeply disturbed by cases of animal cruelty - any time an animal is killed - whether hit by a car or whatever the case may be. So, really, the most important matter to focus on here is the victim in all of this. Through all of our venting and back and forth banter, let’s not forget the unfortunate, brutal, and untimely death this dog has met. And may our justice system not forget at whose hands this animal suffered.
May Cassandra Lauderdale someday be blessed with a mind and a conscience, and may this viscious criminal act come back to haunt her for the rest of her God-given days. I, for one, sincerely hope she is proud of herself.

I know this is a late response, but hey… better late than never, right. Now allow me to impart my immortal wisdom upon you all. #1- If man were not intended to kill and eat animals, God wouldn’t have made them of delicious, tummy satisfying meat. #2- Dogs are not euthanized “peacefully” at the “humane” society… check your facts. It is a painful process that has many pound employees running for the exit. #3. Abortion has nothing to do with this case, however, since it has reared it’s ugly head in this topic- abortion should not be used as a form of birth control (there are effective preventive measures including abstinence, condoms, pills, shots, foams, etc.) it should only be resorted to in the case of an ectopic pregnancy in which the mother’s life is in danger, and is (in my humble opinion)forgivable in the case of rape. #4. Typically when someone is disturbed enough to torture an animal, or even poke dead ones with a stick, they are preparing themselves for the real thing… a human being. Yeah, it sucks that the poor dog was abused in such a manner, and yes, it may very well lead to bigger things… but animal rights activists do get their panties all tangled over Fido and often ignore when things like this happen to one of their own species. Take this all in. It will help, I promise.
