Be warned: At noon, Treasure Coast nuclear power plant will test warning sirens
September 3rd, 2009 by Post StaffHUTCHINSON ISLAND - At noon, everyone in the Treasure Coast: cover your ears.
The St. Lucie Nuclear Power Plant plans to test its sirens today … all 90 sirens within a 10-mile emergency zone.
The test happens every quarter and is conducted by the St. Lucie County Department of Public Safety and the Martin County Department of Emergency Services.
The sirens sound for one minute. Before and after the sirens, officials broadcast a message on the public address system stating “This is only a test.”
“There will be a 15-second wail of the sirens at the end of the final test announcement,” according to information issued this morning by St. Lucie County officials.
If there were an actual emergency at the Nuclear Power Plant, the sirens would sound for five minutes and that would be followed by instructions and another five-minute blast. Detailed instructions would be broadcast over local television and radio stations.
