STUART — Dean W. Bair was sitting in his home Thursday night when his landlord’s husband barged in, confrontational and threatening.

Jason Nordstrom’s wife reportedly had been at Bair’s rented residence in the 2500 block of Southeast Monroe Street earlier and told Bair her husband had been abusing her.

Alanna Nordstrom left Bair’s home and went across the street to a neighbor’s house where her husband was, Martin County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Michael Dougherty said Friday. Alanna Nordstrom reportedly told her husband that Bair. 42, called 911, which in reality Bair had not, Dougherty said.

About 9 p.m., Jason Nordstrom, 35, reportedly went to Bair’s home in a rage. It wasn’t long before Bair fatally shot Nordstrom and called 911. Investigators are working with the State Attorney’s Office to determine whether the shooting was legal, Dougherty said.

“Up to this point, we haven’t found anything that says that it’s an unlawful killing,” Dougherty said.

Dougherty said the Nordstroms reportedly have been separated for about a year, with Jason Nordstrom living in the Keys. He reportedly was in the area to buy school clothes for his 8-year-old child.

Witnesses said the couple fought earlier in the day, and Alanna Nordstrom told investigators he hadn’t physically harmed her, but she was concerned.

“He was throwing brick pavers in the back yard … picked a hammock up, threw it in the pool,” Dougherty said.

Dougherty said Alanna Nordstrom went to Bair’s home, which Bair reportedly rents from her. She then went across the street to a home where Travis Rayburn, a friend of Jason Nordstrom and Bair, was.

Rayburn on Friday said he and Jason Nordstrom ate dinner at Finz Waterfront Grille and that Jason Nordstrom had been drinking.

“She told him that Dean had called the cops and she told him you’d better run because she had been telling everybody that he was beating her,” Rayburn said.

Dougherty said Bair, in fact, had not called authorities. Alanna Nordstrom “was just saying that” so her husband would leave, Dougherty said.

“Mr. Nordstrom goes over to Bair’s house to confront him about calling the cops on him and that’s where this argument continued,” Dougherty said.

Nordstrom reportedly barged in, yelling and screaming.

Nordstrom reportedly “continued in his fit of rage” and came toward Bair, threatening to kill him. Bair fired a single shot from a revolver, striking Nordstrom in the chest.

Nordstrom, who reportedly had no weapons, fell to the living room floor. Bair got a cell phone and went outside to call 911 and report that he’d just shot a man.

During the 911 call, Bair said, “The guy came in my house, beat up his wife, he charged in my house, I told him to get out of the house four or five times.”

Bair could not be reached Friday, nor could Alanna Nordstrom.

“He’s distraught. He’s upset that he had to kill a man in his own home,” Dougherty said of Bair. “He said his options were limited, that was it, that was the only option in his mind that he had left.”

Rayburn said he thinks Bair did nothing wrong.

“If she wouldn’t have come over and told him that Dean called the cops because Dean didn’t even call the cops, then none of this would have happened,” Rayburn said. “The guy stepped in his house and he was probably fearing for his life because he was drunk … and maybe he’d seemed aggressive.”

This article is horribly written. Learn how to write if you are going to work for a newspaper.

  2. nance Says:

And, Bill, what is your point!

  3. Monty Says:

Seems the wife wanted some attention and something to happen. Why else would she tell Blair she was abused. And why would she lie to hubby that Blair called 911. I’m sure the police will investigate her connection to Blair other than being his landlord. Smells awfully fishy. Sad that someone had to die AND that someone had to take a life.

  4. john Says:

Don’t be so hard on the author Bill. What happened here is the authors 2nd grade son clearly wanted a shot at writing an article for the local paper. And frankly I am gonna have to say that was a stellar article for a seven year old!

  5. eash Says:

I have personally know the couple for yrs. The wife by no means is the victim in the matter. Jason should have left her years ago. The wife may not have pulled the trigger but she definitely killed him.

  6. WOW Says:

The post must really be hurting for writers!

  7. Wayne Says:

Looks like Alanna committed Manslaughter. Book her Dano!

  8. friend Says:

they werent together….they had been seperated for about a yr i personally know the couple. I used to skateboard with jason. Alanna actually told me that Mr. Blair had said earlier in the day that if Jason came to his house he would shoot him. Sounds premeditted but for whatever reason the cops never found out.

  9. Anonymous Says:

    Dean Is a MOFO MURDERER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hope they lock him up for Life Let Justice be done !!

This should be investigated this guy that was murdered was a great man !!!!

  10. j Says:

Sorry folks, you cant enter someones house. Mr blair Had every right to shoot him. The new “castle” law in FL makes this act legal.

  11. AA Says:

RIP Jason. He was an old friend and I’m very sad to hear the news. I realize the laws in FL allow you to shoot out of fear in your own home, but this is a very different situation. Lies were told, killing was discussed and murder was what happened. One shot in the torso of a man you know and the actual owner of the home. If the shooter was frightened, he should have shot Jason in the leg. Jason was set up being told lies that push anyone into a fit of rage and Dean was waiting with gun in hand. I am so sad for his daughter. Shame on you Alanna and Dean. If the law doesn’t make you pay I belive kharma will.

Referring to the writing, following this story is like trying to find your way following a trail of bread crumbs. Don’t you realize this newspaper has laid off/bought out all the experienced writers to avoid closing? We’re reading kids right out of college who couldn’t piece together a news story with a write-by-numbers manual. My answer is this: Cancel subscriptions. Take USA Today.

All of you criticizing the Post should see that this article was written by TCPalm.com and not the Post.

Jason is loved by more peaple than Alanna will ever be….I worked with Jason for a while, he was a solid, stand up guy..and a great father, poor Haeley,….And to you Alanna you just couldnt stop with the games…..There is one thing for certian, and two things for sure…you killed him….I hope your happy….to all of Jason’s friends I greeve with you….If anyone knows when services are being held please post it thank you …..Jason ..You will be missed

  15. Cheryl Birgholtz Says:

Sounds like all of you who knew the couple so well, ought to be called in as witnesses to what he said/she said. If you all know that she was this way, then maybe you should have called the cops on her many years ago to stop the abuse. Abuse comes in many different forms, and if things are the way you say they were, then maybe you had a chance to save someone’s life. Yet, if you are truthful and know what you are talking about, then maybe you should go to the cops with the “correct version” and make sure this doesn’t happen again, and be sure to convict those that were in the wrong.

  16. gracie Says:

I really feel for both the victims family and for Dean….but if i was in Dean’s situation i would have done the same thing….Alanna should have not even been over at Dean’s home….She should have not involved Dean in her own personal problems….if she had not went to Dean’s home that night Jason would still be here….if there is anyone to blame i would blame her.

  17. ex-girlfriend Says:

I was in a relationship and lived w/ Jason for 4 years around 10 years ago in North Florida, he was never once abusive to me!!! Jason was a funny and all around good guy!
I don’t see how the law can call this a justifiable MURDER……… All the BS she told back-n-forth between two men caused Jason’s death. Seems to me that her obvious need for up-most attition backfired this time. I think the man who shot Jason is a true coward, Jason didn’t even have a wepon. All I can say as for you Alanna KARMA is gonna get ya. RIP Jason………

  18. friend Says:

how is it that everyone esle can see it was murder….sgt. dougherty is a joke.. you should be ashamed to call yourself a investagator….he is not concerned about this case at all…he doesnt even return phone calls … I guess he is just there for a cheack …that ofcourse we as tax payers,,, pay him….I would fire him…..you should just hand your resignation in now… or step up and do your job

  19. Childhood Friend Says:

I grew up with Jason…I’ve known him all my life. He was a great guy and he married a psycho yet still tried to see the best in her and look what it got him. Alanna…how can you look your daughter in the eye knowing you set him up for this to happen? Jason you were loved by many and will be missed! RIP

  20. logic Says:

It really seems that in a reasonable world that the police department would reserve judgment on this until after having looked at all the facts of the case. I have never heard of anyone shooting a person and not INSTANTLY coming up with a semi-believable excuse for their actions. I, having sold firearms for years, know first hand that there are many people out there who are “chomping at the bit” for the opportunity to shoot at someone and believe their actions to be justified by the laws of the state of Florida. It seems as if someone needs to remind this officer that yes, murderers do lie about the murders they perpetrate. Officer Dougherty also obviously fails to realize that maybe he should reserve comments like, “not finding this shooting illegal at this time”, for his dinner conversation at home. Opinion should be left out, and the true facts of the case investigated. It seems evident that at the moment the words “I didn’t do it” shall suffice as a suitable answer to the question “what happened?”. It seems as if Stuart may be a great place to be a criminal. God bless America, ’cause man we need it! May TRUE justice prevail.

  21. So Sad Says:

I cannot believe that this is as of Friday going to be a week since this shooting and still no arrest. This story is a sure hit for 60 min. There has to be some no pun intended “smoking gun” that the police dept. can figure out. Giving the police dept. fairness. I am hoping they are really investigating this chain of events and not just focusing on the actually shooting. It seems so clear from postings on “TCPalm.com” that Mr. Bair and Mrs. Nordstrom had a conversation regarding the fact that if Mr. Nordstrom came into his home he would shoot him. After looking at the “Castle Doctrine” I have to admit this is a real tough case to say that Mr. Bair was in the wrong. I am sad to think that this is one of those cases that its the law and this is just the downside of this particular law. Hopefully people dont start shooting at anyone or anything that comes thru there door and fluff it off with they were in fear of their lives and more innocent people get murdered. This is a very sad situation and my thoughts and prayers go out to the family.

  22. Curious Says:

What is evident to me is that the newspaper needs to follow up and update this story. From the blogs it is obvious Jason was a wonderful guy and the police seriously need to do further investigation. Why hasn’t the newpaper published updated reports on the status of this case? or chased the police to see what further investigation they have done? Some professional pushing is needed here to move things along

  23. friend Says:

Still waiting; please don’t tell me services were already held ad nobody responded with info about it. Law enforcement or someone since the family is not responding, please let me know. Thank you

  24. friend Says:

Please let me know about services. If already over that would be terribly wrong that nobody informed us about it.
