Fellsmere mom charged in death of 1-year-old left in SUV
July 7th, 2009 by TCPalm.comFELLSMERE — The mother of the 1-year-old boy found dead in a vehicle last month was charged by the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office with aggravated manslaughter of a child.
Alejandra Alvarado, 21, of the 100 block of South Oak Street, Fellsmere, posted $2,500 bail at the Indian River County Jail shortly after she was booked Monday afternoon. Her son, Aiden Alvarado, died after spending at least four hours in the back of his mother’s sport utility vehicle during the afternoon of June 13, detectives said.
Alejandra Alvarado told detectives she had run some errands around the county that day with her son in the back seat and parked at her business, a bait shop in Fellsmere, between 12:30 p.m. and 1 p.m. She didn’t notice her son was still in the SUV until 5 p.m. when she left the business, according to a warrant affidavit. She drove home, checked on the boy and found he wasn’t responsive, sheriff’s officials said.
Temperatures reached 90 degrees in Vero Beach that day. The driver’s side window of the SUV had been left open a few inches, the affidavit said.
Fellsmere police arrived and found Alejandra Alvarado sitting on the front porch of her home holding her son and screaming that she was stupid for leaving him in the car. Paramedics from Indian River County Fire Rescue arrived and declared the boy dead.
The state Medical Examiner’s Office said heat was a prime factor in the boy’s death.

It kills me that people are so careless. What irks me more is that this woman is charged but many others don’t get charged. What’s the deal. Charge them all. there is never a reason to leave a child in the car. The child is the FIRST “item” to be removed. Then go back and get the rest of the stuff. Poor little baby.
Yes, my heart goes out to the mom. She will forever be tormented that her carelessness caused the death of her son. Let it be a lesson to everyone. Take your child OUT of the car. Don’t think you can “do a couple of things” first. Chances are you will forget.

I cannot figure out how you FORGET your child in the car. I have successfully raised 3 children and cannot recall a single time I ever forgot them, then or now.

Parents need to be held accountable for this “mistake.”

I’m sorry but I feel no remorse for that mother… how in the world can you leave a kid in the backseat of a car… It sickens me that there’s not a bigger penalty…. why do people get away with crimes on children… samething with the child and the python incident… the boyfriend should be hit with manslaughter it’s so irresponsible of these parents. It almost gives me a sign of relief that these children are living in heaven now with god because I can only assume the conditions they would be left in if they were still here with their horrible parents.
