Armed boy, 14, surrenders to Fort Pierce police after standoff

July 7th, 2009 by TCPalm.com

FORT PIERCE — A 14-year-old boy who police say fled from officers, brandished a gun and barricaded himself inside a home Monday afternoon surrendered after a few hours, officials said.

Patrick Casimir of 1105 North 29th Street was arrested just before 5 p.m. after he walked out of the house in the 3000 block of Avenue L with his hands raised, according to Sgt. Dennis McWilliams. No one was injured, and no shots were fired.

Casimir was charged with aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, armed burglary and two counts of resisting arrest without violence, officials said.

“We brought it to a peaceful conclusion,” McWilliams said.

Officers recognized Casimir at about 2 p.m. at Avenue L and 29th Street and attempted to arrest him on felony warrants for burglary, McWilliams said. He ran from them into the nearby house. Officials said four people who were in the house ran outside.

Officials said Casimir chose the house because he may be friends with its residents.

Casimir also pointed a weapon police later identified as a sawed-off shotgun at an officer before barricading himself in the house by blocking the windows, McWilliams said.

The SWAT team tried to initiate talks with Casimir but was unsuccessful, according to Chief Sean Baldwin. Officials didn’t know what changed Casimir’s mind to surrender.

Officers searched the house and found the shotgun after the SWAT team determined the house was secure.

Casimir had active felony take and hold orders on burglary, loitering and prowling and trespassing, according to officials.
