Port Salerno apartment fire leaves one dead

July 4th, 2009 by Post Staff

A fire this morning in a two-story apartment building in Port Salerno left one person dead and one injured.

After receiving a report of a structure fire, Martin County Fire Rescue arrived at 2:40 a.m. today at 4612 S.E. Manatee Lane. Although firefighters were able to enter the building, the second story was deemed unsafe until the fire could be brought under control.

Once under control, firefighters re-entered the building to find two people, one dead. The other person was taken to a local hospital.

Both victims remain unidentified. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.

The fire was contained to one apartment and adjoining apartments in the six-unit building received minimal damage. Thirty-five firefighters were involved in fighting the fire.
