67-year-old man drowns near Stuart Causeway

June 4th, 2009 by Jason Schultz

A 66-year-old man fishing in the Indian River near the Stuart Causeway went into distress and drowned near Hutchinson Island in Martin County, according to the Martin County Sheriff’s Office.

Charles L. Stores, of Jensen Beach, was fishing in waist-deep water near the eastern end of the causeway bridge around 7 p.m. Thursday when Stores and his fishing equipment were washed away by strong currents.

A second person, who tried to help, made it back to shore, said Jon Belding, spokesman for Martin County Fire-Rescue.

The sheriff’s office has found no obvious signs of trauma of foul play.
