ROTC cadet accused of stealing air rifles from Martin County school

STUART — An ROTC cadet was arrested on grand theft charges on Monday after he allegedly stole two air rifles from his high school’s ROTC program.

South Fork High School’s Reserve Officer Training Corps. teacher notified Martin County Sheriff’s deputies that two air rifles were missing from the school’s ROTC armory.

When questioned by a Martin County Sheriff’s deputy on Monday, cadet James R. Burgos admitting at first to taking only one air rifle, according to a sheriff’s report.

After other cadets told investigators that Burgos had also taken the other rifle, Burgos confessed of the second theft, deputies said.

“I was scared,” he allegedly told a deputy.

Burgos’s father returned the rifles to the school, the report states.

Burgos, 18, is a high school senior already enlisted in the U.S. Navy, according to the report.

He is behind held at the Martin County jail in lieu of $5,000 bail.

    Hopefully, if he gets into the U.S. Navy he won’t steal a carrier with nuclear weapons and blow up his own country. I don’t want him serving my country. He is a risk.
