June 1st, 2009 by Post Staff

STUART – The woman credited with leading the revival of the city’s downtown is visiting this week to help kick off revitalization efforts for another part of the city.

Former Stuart Mayor Joan Jefferson, now program manager for the Florida Main Street Program in Tallahassee, is coming to Stuart to spend three days with the recently designated East Stuart Main Street Program.

Jefferson will bring a team of three other Main Street professionals from across the country to help evaluate the East Stuart community and advise the new Main Street program in its economic revitalization efforts.

The three-day visit will kick off Tuesday at Harvey Plaza, one of East Stuart’s most prominent commercial buildings, located at 508 SE Martin Luther King Boulevard. A tour of the East Stuart community will follow at 10:00 a.m.

The visit will conclude Thursday at 6:30 p.m. with a public presentation of the resource team’s findings and recommendations. The presentation will be held at the 10th Street Recreation Center in Stuart and followed by a reception with light refreshments. The entire community is invited to attend the presentation and reception.

East Stuart Main Street is a private, non-profit organization established to take the lead in the redevelopment and preservation of the historic commercial neighborhood of East Stuart. The program is authorized by Florida Main Street. Goals of the organization include creating a positive image for the community through outreach, education, special events, and economic development.
