Mother, son arrested after pot package arrives in mail

May 21st, 2009 by TCPalm.com

FORT PIERCE — A mother and son were arrested Tuesday after the mother signed for a package of 8 pounds of marijuana addressed to her son, according to arrest affidavits released Wednesday.

The mother, 51-year-old Maria Andrade, said the pot was for “personal use,” rather than sale, an affidavit states.

The package was “flagged” by postal officials as possibly containing marijuana, and additional investigation confirmed the presence of drugs.

It was addressed to Mauricio G. Andrade, 20, of the 2600 block of South 27th Street. He is Maria Andrade’s son. Maria Andrade signed for the package and said her son was expecting a delivery.

The younger Andrade arrived minutes later, and both were taken into custody after police executed a search warrant.

They each face felony marijuana-related charges.

This country needs to open there eyes and get with the current times and legalize marijuana. There are several reasons why marijuana should be legal, first this country has nearly a trillion dollar budget shortfall if marijuana was legal it would be source of tax money for the government to reduce this shortfall and besides the tax money generated there would be a significant reduction in government money being spent on prosecuting and imprisoning people for marijuana related offenses that would be in the hundreds of millions if not billions of dollars.

I could understand if the package were of “little weight.” But, 8 pounds is for more than “personal use.” I am on “pain management” for an injury that I suffered 4 years ago. Befoe I moved back to Florida, I lived in Washington State and California. Both ofg those states are legal gor “medicinal marijuana.” There is new law trying to be passed as I sit here and type this. If you are pro-marijuana, please go to http://www.pufmm.org and print out a petition. you must be registered to vote to be able to download anything. It is worth the try.
