JENSEN BEACH — Local law enforcement officers will be serving you lunch and dinner today.

The annual Tip-A-Cop fundraising event to benefit Special Olympics Florida is scheduled for today. Members of the Martin County Sheriff’s Office, Stuart Police Department, the Florida Highway Patrol and other local law enforcement agencies will be volunteering at Red Lobster in Jensen Beach from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. until 10 p.m. assisting the dining room staff.

Gratuities from patrons during those times will benefit Special Olympics Florida as part of the local fundraising effort for the 2009 Law enforcement Torch Run.

Law enforcement officers from over 300 Florida agencies all participate in the state-wide torch run to benefit the athletes of Special Olympics Florida. Each year, over 3,000 Officers carry the torch on a 1500-mile relay through more than 60 counties in Florida.

The mission of Special Olympics Florida is to provide year-round sports training and competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for people with intellectual disabilities who wish to participate, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in the sharing of gifts, skills, and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes, and the community. The ultimate objective of Special Olympics Florida is to help people with intellectual disabilities participate as productive and respected members of society at large, by offering them a fair opportunity to develop and demonstrate their skills and talents through sports training and competition, and by increasing the public’s awareness of their capabilities and needs.
