St. Lucie deputies: Ex Walgreens pharmacy tech befriends elderly woman, steals painkillers

A former Walgreens pharmacy technician has been arrested after police say she befriended an elderly woman and then stole credit cards and prescription drugs from her.
St. Lucie County Sheriff’s officials have charged Melissa Dewey of Bella Vista Way in Port St. Lucie with multiple crimes including grand theft from the elderly, trafficking in oxycondone and fraudulent use of ID and credit card.
They say Dewey first ingratiated herself to Dianne Birnbaum about six months ago when Birnbaum called her Walgreens pharmacy requesting if the drug store made home deliveries.
Birnbaum told investigators Dewey, a pharmacy technician, answered the phone, told Birnbaum that Walgrees does not make deliveries, but offered to drop off Birnbaum’s Xanax prescription on her way home. Dewey continued to visit Birnbaum and eventually got the elderly woman to give her a couple prescription pain pills for pain Dewey sad she had in her knee.
In February, Dewey insisted on taking Birnbaum, a diabetic, to the hospital saying that she thought Birnbaum’s blood sugar needed medical attention, according to the investigation report.
Birnbaum was admitted to the hospital – she thought for blood sugar issues – but interviews with hospital staff indicated that Dewey had told staff the elderly woman had fainted and later told doctors and state Department of Children and Family investigators that Birnbaum was incapable of caring for herself.
Sheriff’s investigators now contend that Dewey used Birnbaum’s hospitalization as an opportunity to steal 3-month’s worth of Birnbaum’s mail order prescription drugs including 800 Oxycontin tablets, 360 Percocets and 130 prozac.

To say “leave the poor girl alone” … now that is just down right funny! She TESTS POSITIVE for one of the MANY missing drugs, makes UNAUTHORIZED charges on credit cards, and FRAUDULENT USE OF ID … AND the list goes on to include PARTICIPATION IN AN ADULTEROUS AFFAIR! Just goes to show - You can dress it up, but trash is still TRASH!
