Inmate found dead in Okeechobee jail

March 11th, 2009 by Ana X. Ceron

OKEECHOBEE — A 16-year-old boy was found dead at his Okeechobee County jail cell on Tuesday, his death likely a suicide, officials said.

Shortly before 4:30 p.m., detention deputies found Nelson Brewer hanging by a bed sheet from the top bunk, about five feet from the floor, according to a news release from the Okeechobee County Sheriff’s Office.

Fire Rescue was called to the scene, but Brewer was pronounced dead soon after its arrival.

Brewer was locked in his cell alone at the time of the incident. Video surveillance footage indicates that no one approached the cell during the incident, according to deputies. An initial investigation indicates that his death was a suicide, officials said.

Brewer’s body has been taken to the medical examiner for an autopsy. Results are expected to take at least 8 weeks.

Brewer was arrested Oct. 31 and faced adult charges of aggravated battery.
