February 27th, 2009 by Ana X. Ceron

PORT ST. LUCIEFirefighters are working to contain a 1.5-acre fire that broke out in a wooden area west of Florida’s Turnpike.

The St. Lucie County Fire District got the call about 11:50 a.m. and arrived to battle the brush fire in a heavily wooden area off the intersection of Del Rio Boulevard and Lennox Street, spokeswoman Catherine Chaney said this afternoon.

A portion of Del Rio by Lennox Street has been closed to traffic, Chaney said.

The fire has not yet been contained, but there is heavy smoke in the area, Chaney said.

At one point three nearby homes were threatened but are now clear from danger, Chaney said.

There were no evacuations and officials haven’t determined what sparked the fire.

The state Forestry Division also arrived with a plow to help contain the fire, Chaney said.
