An inmate who escaped from the Okeechobee County jail earlier this month was arrested on Tuesday after he was found hiding in West Palm Beach for the past two weeks.

The U.S. Marshals Florida Regional Task Force found Alejandro Perez, 45, trying to escape out a window at a home in the 4600 block of Sutton Terrace, according to a news release from the U.S. Marshals Service.

Perez had escaped from the Okeechobee jail on Feb. 6, when he managed to gain access to the roof of the compound and fled, the release states. Investigators believe that Perez had help from family immediately after his escape. He was in jail on charges of burglary, criminal mischief, grand theft and loitering and prowling.

An investigation into his escape found that Perez had been working as a painter and had been staying in the West Palm Beach area for the past couple weeks, marshal officials said.

As U.S. Marshals and task force officers entered the home on Sutton, Perez tried to climb out a window in the back of the house, officials said.

He is being held in the Palm Beach County jail.
