Hold the phone: QVC reducing employee hours in PSL
February 20th, 2009 by TCPalm.comStarting Feb. 23 certain hourly workers — termed “non-exempt employees” by the company — in the order services group have been advised that they will be scheduled to work on average one day less a week than currently scheduled, said QVC spokeswoman Tara Hunter.
The change in hours is a result of a decline in the volume of business, she said.
The move is considered temporary as the company will reevaluate the change by June 30.
“We’re going to evaluate and determine to extend of suspend it beyond the June date,” Hunter said.
Employees who have their hours cut will be able to pick up additional hours if openings become available, she said.
The employees were notified Thursday.
The Port St. Lucie call center on N.W. Peacock Boulevard handles calls from QVC viewers and orders from the company’s Web site. The call center opened in St. Lucie County in October 1999 and employs about 1,300.
There are no layoffs in the latest move.
The company announced last year that about 900 jobs were being cut, including 10 locally, as it sought to lower its 2009 operating costs by $30 million to $40 million.
QVC is one of the nation’s largest multimedia retailers. The company is owned by Liberty Media Corp.
