Officials urge residents to store emergency contacts in their cell phones

February 13th, 2009 by Ana X. Ceron

FORT PIERCE — Most people don’t tuck a list of emergency contacts in their pockets when they leave home.

But they usually do carry around their cell phones.

So fire, law enforcement and hospital officials throughout St. Lucie County on Friday kicked off a public awareness campaign reminding residents to program just a few more numbers into their portable phones.

They campaign urges residents to “ICE” their phones by adding contact information for people who should be called “In Case of Emergency.”

Emergency contacts should be labeled with the acronym ICE in the person’s address listing – such as ICE-Mom, officials suggested.

To alert emergency responders about the listings, residents can apply a red circular sticker that reads “ICE” on the outside of the phone.

The stickers will be available at all St. Lucie County Fire District fire stations.

Residents can also carry an “ICE” card in their wallets. The green cards list an emergency contact for the card-holder as well as any medications or allergies he or she may have.

The cards will be available at St. Lucie County Medical Center and Lawnwood Regional Medical Center & Heart Institute.
