STUART — A Martin County Sheriff’s Office worker is on paid suspension after he was arrested Thursday night on a felony charge of possessing steroids.
Brent Smith, who has been working as a computer technician for the sheriff’s office since 2005, was released from the Martin County Jail after posting $5,000 bond.
As a worker of the office’s technical services unit, 35-year-old Smith is a non-sworn, civilian employee, sheriff’s spokeswoman Rhonda Irons said.
Smith has been placed on paid administrative leave and officials are investigating the arrest.
Smith was arrested following a search of his home by deputies.
According to a sheriff’s report, Smith showed investigators his stash of anabolic steroids.

Steroids are illegal…period. He broke the law so he should be arrested. I might add that I know of more than a few police who take steroids. Talk about low self esteem. Hope their nuts shrivel up like raisins and they come down with back acne.

Ron says that steroids are illegal.Well, so are aliens who slip across the boder. So would you call up your US representatives and ask them to be sure the government inforces the laws on illegal aliens.
Karen and Derek. The steroids are illegal.Just like cocaine these drugs do harm. I agree that smoking and drinking do harm but they are not illegal.

BigArch,
Funny you say that like this is your country. Only native americans have the right to complain about immigrants. So the nextime you look at some immigrant and ask why the hell he is here.. remember there are native americans who would want nothing more than to see you hope on a boat or plane back to motherland europe!

Steroids kill. Are you people are ignorant of the health problems related to steroid use or are you just fellow employees at the sheriffs Department? How many of you are spiking yourselves with the juice so you can bulk up for the chicks? I have seen a few deputies who look like professional weight lifters and it makes me wonder.

Steroids are legal! If your wealthy enough, any rejuvination clinic in the area(and theres lots)will prescribe body building dosages of any anabolic compound. Under the guise of medical supervision. Like anything else steroids can be used safely with education and moderation. If someone you know looks like a body builder 99 times out of 100 they are on some form of steroids. Cops included. This Felony will likely ruin this mans life. His only consequence for use. If you dont know much about it, then dont weigh in your opinion.

I agree with insider It is vanity to pump poison into your body so you can look better. It reminds of these bimbos who shoot caulking into their lips or the ones who recieve so much plastic surgery that they look like deformed circus freaks. Be a real man and build your body with work, sports and exercise.

Let’s look at the big picture. Mr. Smith was arrested for possession of an illegal drug-period. Unfortunately, we spend so much time and resources criminalizing certain behavior in an attempt to make ourselves feel better. The war on drugs has done little to combat drug use. However what it has accomplished is far worse. We routinely lock up people and ruin their lifes. We rejoice in their short comings and praise ourselves for not being the drug addict. Look a little closer-the only difference in their addition and yours is that theirs is illegal and your is not-yet (The day chocolate is illegal I know I am in trouble)! Other countries have moved pass the criminalization of drugs-thus allowing addicts to be a function part of society and eventually kicking the habit all together. WHAT AN IDEA! But of course where is the money in that. As longs as it is illegal there is loads of revenue to be earned and people to get rich! Take a good look -keeping these drugs illegal only benefits a few and it is certainly not you or I!!!!!

“Steroids kill. Are you people are ignorant of the health problems related to steroid use or are you just fellow employees at the sheriffs Department?”
Give ONE example of ONE person “killed” by steroids. And no, Lyle A was not killed by steroid use. Where are the bodies? If this is such a “problem”, and the police need to spend time on it, show me all these people who’s lives are shattered. Show me the caskets of all these people who are killed by steroids.
And, of course, what another poster said is true; if you can afford it you can have a doc write you for all the steroids that you can stand. It’s just much more expensive then getting them in the gym, but any anti-aging doc will write you for testosterone, growth hormone, and pretty much anything else that you feel you “need” to combat your aging.

Steroids cause brain cancer, heart problems and they make people go crazy like the above poster Jeff who lost his mind over a differing point of view. It is just a matter of public record you dummy. What about the professional wrestler who killed his wife and kid? You know steroids are dangerous so don’t try to sell them as being safer than vitamins. They are illegal because they are dangerous. Your post reminds me of the guy calling the Love Doctors radio show attempting to convince the listening audience that heroin was safe to use. You babbeling pumpkin heads should stop spiking the juice and take the advice of Marine wife, be a real man and build your bodies with execise instead of artificial drugs…..loser.

Hey Jeff, go stick your needle in buddy, your anger is not from steroids, your little shrunk up balls that no longer produce testosterone are not from roids, either is your acne infested face and back, keep on taking them, you are so smart. they wont kill you??? denial, denial, denial…oh, at least you’ll look good in your casket.

First off, steroids aren’t illegal. You need a prescription to take them, had the person in this article been more affluent, he would have had a doctor write him all the steroids he wanted. It’s only less affluent people who get busted for this anymore; those with financial means all go to doctors (and therefore, aren’t breaking any laws).
The wrestler you’re talking about (Chris Boniet?) did indeed kill his wife and children, who, incidentally, were NOT taking steroids. He then killed himself, not with steroids, but with a handgun (IIRC). He was a mentally distrubed person, unfortunately it happens all the time. Where’s you evidence that steroids had ANY role in any of those deaths?
There’s not really any evidence that steroids cause brain cancer, but, let’s just let that one slide (I’ll accept that there COULD be a relationship between heavy steroid use and cancer). However, compare the safety of steroids to the safety of plastic surgery, and then come complain about how “deadly” they are.
Steroids and plastic surgery are used for the same purpose. 1,000s of people have died under the knife in the doctors office, it happens every few days. 1000s more have been disfigured for life from some unforeseen reaction. I can show you the bodies, these people were directly killed because of their decision to “use” plastic surgery. And yet, how many people do we have in jail for “plastic surgery offenses”? How is plastic surgery not a greater threat to society they steroid use?
Try doing a little research before spewing all the DEA’s talking points.
The DEA only enforces this law against the poor/middle class anyway, all those with money have long ago moved to getting all their gear from pharmacies.

When a person uses steroids it is like fertilizing turf in a garden. The trees and bushes will grow faster and turn green but the weeds will also grow and flourish just like cancerous tumors in the human body. Overtaxed refuses to acknowledge the mountain of evidence that proves the dangers of steroid use. All the doctors scientist and the New England Journal of medicine are full of crap because overtaxed must know better. Jeff,Brent, overtaxed or what ever screen name you are using, whoever you are…I wish you luck in your mission to find the fountain of youth through dangerous chemicals.
February 15th, 2009 at 4:25 pm
So, please, present some of that evidence here. Post up some links to this proven link between cancer and steroids. And, also understand, I’m not trying to say that steroid use isn’t without dangers, just that, when compared to plastic surgery, it’s FAR less dangerous and has fewer side effects.
Also, my initial comment was not so much about the safety of steroids (although I’m willing to discuss this with you if you’d like), but with the hypocrisy of prosecuting people for their use. Only middle class/poor people will EVER get in trouble for steroids, all the upper class people have doctors writing them for these drugs. So, this guy loses his job because he doesn’t have the money to get these chemicals from a doctor. Doesn’t that strike you as somehow wrong?
I wouldn’t say that steroids are the fountain of youth, but they are certainly better then any other compound that we’ve ever created for age reversal/anti-aging. If you can present a better compound/substance, feel free. However, pretty much all research and actual evidence points to steroids and growth hormone (especially growth hormone) as the current best “Fountain of Youth” that we’ve got.
Oh, and BTW, I’m not posting on multiple screen names. And I don’t take steroids (but have plenty of friends who do and who are all successful, upper-middle class men who; if you could get them to admit using, would tell you it was the best thing that they ever did for themselves). I know a few doctors, a lawyer, 2 college professors, a few C level executives, and many more middle managers/white collar professionals who are all taking steroids (Dr. prescribed, because they can all afford it). Not at all the image you have in your mind of a bunch of “juice head” kids.

Maybe we should take a look at the government’s regulation of things that are none of their business. I can drink (liver damage, brain cancer, all sorts of illnesses) but can’t take ephedra (a couple people died because they took excessive amounts) ….. I can smoke (lung cancer, emphysema, etc.) but I can’t take steroids (possible ill effects never really proven)…..why is it anyone’s business what I do to my body…do we not pride ourselves on being a “free” country….. that as long as we’re not harming anyone else we are able to do as we please? You guys who are anti steroids are probably little wormy guys who got beat up in high school by the football players….
