FORT PIERCE — Violent crimes in 2008 decreased by more than seven percent in the city compared with the previous year, and overall crime went down by more than four percent, Police Chief Sean Baldwin said.
In addition, over the last five years Fort Pierce has seen a 12 percent drop in overall crime, Baldwin announced in a news release circulated today.
“This is an incredible accomplishment, especially in the face of an extreme economic downturn that would normally produce significant increases in crime,” Baldwin said in a prepared statement. “I am not surprised that we’ve beaten the odds, because our officers and support staff are working extremely hard to protect the community we serve.”
Baldwin credited the decreases, in part, to his department’s analysis of crime trends. The work has helped officers hone strategies to stop and prevent crime.
