PORT ST. LUCIE — A high school student was arrested this week after he reportedly swiped a decorative apple from his teacher’s desk.

Dylan R. Morrison had been playing with a spring he had at Port St. Lucie High School on Tuesday morning, when he was using it to make noise and disrupt class, an administrator told police.

When teacher John Contoupe asked the 18-year-old to put the spring away, Morrison refused, according to a police report. So the teacher took the spring and threw it in a trash bin.

Morrison became upset, walked up to Contoupe’s desk and took a red glass apple from his desk, the report states. He told Contoupe he wouldn’t return the apple until he got his spring back, police said.

Contoupe then called an administrator for help, and when Morrison still refused to return the apple, the administrator called police.

When police arrived, Morrison pulled out the apple from the pocket of his sweatshirt to show that he had it, but told an officer he wouldn’t return it until he had his spring, according to the report. The apple was reported to be worth $10, according to the police.

After police explained that he could face criminal charges for not returning the apple, the student allegedly said, “I don’t care, I’m not leaving without my spring.”

Morrison faces misdemeanor charges of disruption of a school function and petty theft.

  3. EL Says:

I think this is so stupid. First, the teacher should of put it away until the end of class and not throw away. Second, they call the police on this child or being a kids over an apple. I think they should be worried about more important things in school. What got the boy upset was the teacher throwing his belongings in the garbage!

why is this in the news?

  5. Tom Says:

Belongings? It was a spring! WTF? A spring that he was using to make noise and disrupt the class and the teacher. That glass apple may have been a gift from his wife or children. The student was clearly in the wrong but if he had just given the apple back when authorities arrived he would’ve just gotten detention. He’s an idiot.

  8. Father of a teacher Says:

i would assume that the class has thirty other students trying to follow what the teacher is saying. So, this jerk not only was affecting his education, but all the others in the classroom. The teacher has probably six other periods to teach, mentor, grade etc.
The police officers time that was wasted. Maybe some form of boot camp, where good old military training might be just what some kids need.

  9. BigArch Says:

EL is the reason these students do whatever makes them feel good.I bet you don’t have children or if you do they are brats.
Teachers need the ability to control the class and they can’t do that with namby pambys like EL.
nomad al has it right. A good whupping would surely help.

  10. Amon Says:

Welcome to St Lucie. Should of just gave back the spring which was his item. Why didn’t the teacher get arrested? I took something of the students and didn’t return it. As I said welcome to St Lucie.
