Eleven spend the night at Fort Pierce shelter

February 5th, 2009 by Ana X. Ceron

FORT PIERCE — Eleven people trickled into the Fort Pierce Community Center Wednesday to spend the night as temperatures dipped into the 30s.

For the fifth night this year, the center had been turned into a temporary cold weather shelter for the homeless.

This morning, the folks who took refuge awoke before dawn to fold blankets, down some hot coffee and layer on their sweaters and flannel shirts.

Rushing a little bit more than the others was Joi, one of the two women who spent the night. She had left her three large dogs in her jeep parked outside.

“You make a commitment, no matter what the economic conditions are like, you take care of your animal,” she said.

The shelter at 600 North Indian River Drive is scheduled to open up again tonight at 7.
