Burglaries, attempted break-in reported at three check cashing stores

January 30th, 2009 by Ana X. Ceron

PORT ST. LUCIE — Police are investigating to see whether a burglary and an attempted break-in at two check-cashing stores discovered this morning are linked.

Sometime overnight, someone broke into the Advance America Cash Advance at 10169 S. U.S. 1 and made off with cash and the store’s surveillance video, police spokesman Officer Thomas Nichols said.

The suspect or suspects pried open a back door, cut a hole in a floor safe and took an unknown amount of cash, Nichols said. An employee discovered the theft this morning.

Another employee discovered the attempted break-in at the Check ‘n Go at 251 S.W. Port St. Lucie Blvd. Nichols said police received two alarm calls at the store at about 3:30 a.m. and 4 a.m. but officers found nothing suspicious. Then this morning police found a pry mark at the back door, Nichols said.

Police are now investigating whether the two incidents are related, Nichols said.

St. Lucie County Sheriff’s deputies are investigating an overnight incident at third check-cashing store.

According to sheriff’s officials, someone broke into the Advance America Cash Advance at 7540 S. U.S. 1. No other information was available on that case.
