Man accused of threatening roommate with bayonet
January 13th, 2009 by Ana X. CeronPORT ST. LUCIE — A man faces an aggravated assault charge, accused of threatening his roommate with a World War II bayonet.
The roommate told police that Charlie Graves, who turns 52 on Wednesday, had kicked him out of his home in the 1700 block of Southwest Hampshire Lane on Monday.
The 31-year-old man said he had been out of the house looking for a new job when Graves changed the locks, a police report states.
When he returned, he knocked on the door until Graves let him in, he said, and then started packing up his things when he realized how upset Graves had become.
As he was removing items from his room, the man told police, Graves grabbed a 20-inch bayonet that was hanging on the wall and demanded that he get on his knees. He refused and Graves then head-butted him in the face, the report states.
Graves at first denied threatening his roommate with the bayonet, and that he only head-butted him because the man had tackled him, police said.
“I wouldn’t need a bayonet if I wanted to kill” him, Graves allegedly told police.
He later admitted that he wielded the weapon at his roommate.
When police arrived that afternoon, they found the roommate holding an icepack over his right eye. He declined medical treatment.
Graves was arrested on charges of aggravated assault with a weapon and simple battery. He was released from the St. Lucie County jail after posting $3,000 bond.
