Doctor accused in ‘pill mill’ deaths gets $280,000 bail
December 19th, 2008 by Holly Baltz
A judge Friday set bail at $280,000 for former doctor Asuncion Luyao, who is headed for a third trial on manslaughter, drug trafficking and racketeering charges in connection with accusations she ran a “pill mill” from her Port St. Lucie office.
Luyao was arrested in 2002 after it was discovered that six of her patients overdosed on Oxycodone and other potent painkillers.
Her first trial ended in a mistrial in 2005.
She was sentenced to 50 years in prison in 2006 after a jury convicted her of one of the deaths, five counts of trafficking pain pills and one count of racketeering.
An appeals court overturned those convictions this year, saying jurors were tainted by irrelevant testimony about Luyao’s gambling habit.
