Man reports $6 million painting stolen from home
December 4th, 2008 by Ana X. CeronA Port St. Lucie man reported that someone stole a painting he said was worth $6 million from his home.
Forty-four-year-old Bobby Lee Kirk told police on Monday that he discovered his safe and the painting missing from his home in the 800 block of Southwest Idol Avenue early that evening.
Kirk reported that the safe contained a Paul Klee painting he estimated was worth $6 million and prescription pills for his wife. Police say they have not been able to verify the painting’s worth.
Kirk told police nothing else in the home had been disturbed or was missing.
A neighbor told police he saw a man and woman drive up to the house in two vehicles at about 3 p.m. that day. A woman went in through the front door and let the man in through the garage, he said. Later he saw them walk away from the back of the hose with a square object, according to a police report.
Paul Klee was a Swiss-born Expressionist painter known for his writings on color theory. He died in 1940 at the age of 60.
Police spokesman Robert Vega said investigators couldn’t confirm that the painting is a Paul Klee original. The painting was not insured and has not been appraised, Vega said.
