Report: Student arrested for ‘passing gas’ at Stuart school

November 22nd, 2008 by TCPalm.com

— A student at Spectrum Junior-Senior High School was arrested earlier this month after he passed gas and turned off his classmate’s computers, according to a report released Friday by the Martin County Sheriff’s Office.

According to the report, the incident occurred Nov. 4, when the 13-year-old boy “continually disrupted his classroom environment” by purposely breaking wind. He then shut off some computers other students were using.

A school resource officer placed the boy under arrest after he confessed about his behavior, according to the report. He was charged with disruption of school function and released to his mother.

What happened to discipline administered by teachers, as authority figures? Why does the school need to have a 13 year old kid arrested for misbehaving? They should be able to enforce some rules. Kids should be taught respect for parents/teachers — police should not be the only authority figures.

That crazy. I didn’t know there was a law for passing gas. A child get a rap sheet for frating wow. what is this world coming too. Next thing you know they going to be arresting kids for talking out of turn. Yeah what did happen to teachers and the school faculty disclipine students. Well I guess it the sissy world we live in today.

  4. Teacher Says:

I literally laughed out loud when I heard this on the news. In the classroom, I know that students purposely do this (farting) for attention. What consequence can you give for farting? I have had chronic problems with this. I called parents to perhaps explain that they needed to change their children’s diet. The parents reply is that they do not know what to do about their children’s behavior. They are helpless. What is my suggestion? The only thing that I can do is explain that this is a normal body function and since the student in question wants to continue, we(class) have to deal with it. After a couple of times of dealing with it (contained smell) This generally stops the behavior. This was only enacted after my constant frustation with students. The teacher was not only dealing with farting but constant disruption of th school environment. The resource officer could not arrst without admin support. Whose fault is it? I don’t know but I can sense a total state of frustration on all sides.
