Man accused of trying to kill girlfriend after rape

A man is accused of trying to kill his former girlfriend after he raped her at her Stuart home on Thursday.

Stuart police responded to the 18-year-old woman’s home shortly after 7:30 p.m., when she told officers that her ex-boyfriend had entered her apartment while armed with a firearm and raped her, according to a news release.

Before fleeing, Jose C. Irurzun, 21, tied her up and put a plastic bag over her head and secured it with wire, police said.

The woman’s roommate arrived shortly after the incident and found her, police said.

Irurzun was arrested at 3 a.m. by West Palm Beach police, who transported him to Martin County. He faces charges of sexual battery while armed, armed burglary and attempted murder. He is being held in the Martin County jail without bail.
